I am working on a mod for players like me - players who "suck"

How do you know if you "suck"?

The simplest way is this. If you have never had a world conquest - or come close - even if you've used the "annex" cheat code to annex HAB, BOH, SWE, CAS, POR, FRA, and ENG at the start of the game, you may "suck".

In order to help players like me, I am creating a mod that will give your nation a boost, and allow you more fine control than the "Very Easy, Easy, Normal" difficulty settings. What I need to know however is why do you suck?

What do you have the most difficulty with? For me it's tech levels and inflation, especially inflation. So what is it for you? The most popular responses will be put into the mod.

Certain:
Better Compete Chance (10%)
Free Tradition (?)
Cheaper Loan Interest (if possible)
Cheaper Techs (-2%)
Free Inflation Reduction (-10%)
Tax Income (+10%)

Possible:
Added Morale (0.1)
Added Manpower (+10%)
Cheaper Units (10%)
Leader Fire (1)
Leader Shock (1)
Missionary Success (+1.5%)
Spy Efficiency (+5%)
Stability Cost (-50%)

The idea is to put these all as a single event that you can fire using the console. IE "Event 1234567" and then pick the option you want.

If multiple event files are made, I will also be able to do this:
Adjustments to Sliders prior to game-start
Better MTTH on Cultural events

Well, before I discovered the wonders of console commands, I tried playing a clean game as Georgia. It was a complete debacle! And ambuscade from 10 sides! That is to say, trying to stave off various neighbouring countries (Hi Golden Horde!) was pretty much all I was doing, leaving little money left over to invest in other technologies. The fact that tech levels crawled along like a Siberian molasses flood didn't much help, either.

Plus, there's the issue of my insistence on playing underdog (i.e. non-European) countries, which would inevitably get hosed over once some European country started sniffing around, thanks to the current tech group system. could go into my righteous indignation regarding tech groups, but I won't. Right now.

Well nothing you can change, the reason I suck is that I am so fing lazy to build anything and when I do I build shitty buildings in shitty provinces causing my income to break, which coses my troops to become less and drag me down on the tech race

In no particular order:

Higher base supply/supply multiplier to avoid attrition. It's a common newbie mistake. Very easy only increases WE reduction, but doesn't prevent you from draining your MP.

Less army maintenance, or flat out 10 monthly income increase that goes straight to treasury, or just remove army maintenance entirely.

Compete chance, 20% should be good for most countries.

Remove oversea modifier.

Slider modification before game start.

Cultural/Army/Naval tradition never decays.

Remove magistrate requirement on buildings.

Less MTTH on cultural assimilation, and boundary dispute. Maybe veteran's home too.

0% loan interest, though I'm not sure if this is hard coded or not.

Humm. This mod is more for "not a n00b but still suck" kind of people.

I'm also not certain I can tinker with army maintenance? But if I can, I'll make it cheaper by a %age.

Compete chance is something I'm pretty sure I can increase.

I don't know if I can, or would want to remove the overseas modifier.

I also don't think I can change the slider modification.

I could (I think) set it up so you get Army/Navy/Culture tradition for free every year automatically.

Removing the magistrate requirement really is beyond the scope of the intention of the mod, plus, I don't think I could do it if I wanted to.

Less MTTH on assimilation and things is something I could work on, but this sounds more complex, and so would be on the list for "After beta", but it will be on the list.

I'll also see if I can make loan interest cheaper, or nil. If I can, I will.

I've edited the first post to include some of these.

Not spending the time to do a world conquest means you suck?

Jeez, that's a high bar. That isn't mandatory to be good at the game.

I think you already covered the things I had difficulty with at first. However, I maintain that it's not the game mechanics that make the game difficult, simply how badly a lot of them are explained at first, and new players just don't know how to react. Making it easier won't make it easier to play the game, it will just ignore and avoid those problems, which isn't fun. a long time ago I think I had more fun learning how to succeed as Russia than actually playing as Russia.

Mainly a mod would want to focus on making the interface more user friendly. I don't know if that's possible, though.

It's more for adjusting the game difficulty levels. I find easy too easy but normal too hard. What I have now in my OP is a combo of "Lucky Nation" bonuses the AI gets and half or less of the bonus you get for Easy.

Most of the things you're going to change look good, but I'd reduce the inflation reduction to possibly 5%? Isn't 10% the same bonus you get on V.Easy? Along the same lines, 2% tech cost reduction looks to be low to me, in most cases that won't save even a month between each level.

One other thing I would suggest is to change to messages on the loading screens to some more helpful tips. I don't know how you'd do this, but if it's not too difficult it could help people to pick up some of the more complex aspects of the game.

^I agree with this. If you can also somehow make the interface more friendly and to make the hidden mechanics less hidden (e.g., including some hints to the hidden effects behind NIs) then it may make the game easier without changing the base difficulty.

As a side note, anyone know what Iwanow was banned for?

I believe it's cause of his raage! thread on EU4, since it was his last thread/posts.

Back on topic, I think the biggest thing that'll throw new people over is attrition, infamy of different CBs and conditions, and alliance cascade.

It would've been nice if WE is listed next to manpower, and a notification like deficient fund telling you which unit is getting hit by attrition.

A list of alliances of alliance would be nice or a map mode like diplomacy where green is you selected nation, blue is alliances of green nation, yellow represents alliances of blues nations, and red for alliances of yellow nations.
Showing the number of regiments and big/small ships on DoW window for your target and his allies would've been awesome too, but both of these would probably mean too much work.

If you use the button in the top right of the screen to list armies it will do exactly this for you.

You mean the red text stead of white? I thought that only shows up when the unit is dying due to not getting enough reinforcements, which will still be white if you're still funneling enough MP into the unit. I've once accidentally piled up 10 WE during peace time and couldn't figure out which pile of unit is causing it until I clicked through 20 armies.

I suppose I could always turn army maintenance to 0 to find the cause, but it won't stop me from accumulating WE till it's a little too late.
