I was just thinking about this, I'm inclined to like the reformed religion in this game quite a bit. The colony growth bonus is a nice one (does it effect only specific reformed religion provinces though?)

I also like to play historically accurate religion with my country if possible.
It costs a whhole bunch of ducats to convert the heretics and takes quite a bit of time.

On the other hand you could choose Ecumenism and Humanist tolerance, save yourself some ducats and your nerves. But this means losing some of that Machiavellian flair.

Then you end up playing your country with a tolerant-hippie-weedsmoking-Dutch-liberal- style strategy. For better or worse :ninja:

Unfortunately, taking tolerance ideas means that you get faster reformation events, converting things to the other religions, and religious intolerance still causes a boatload of RR and loss of taxes. It's just better to have a uniform country.

As far as I know, it's always better to have one religion in your empire. Getting missionaries might be difficult, but taking one NI to get more outweighs taking two to not make other religions be such a big deal.

Also, coastal provinces with non-state religions reduce your naval forcelimits, and tolerance doesn't prevent it. This can be a real killer for countries like England, as I discovered in the middle of a huge war with Castille a while back.

Reformed plainly sucks. Trade efficiency can be capped, and the 10% growth for colonies + 0.5 colonist in no way stand up to 20% tax and 10% production that protestantism gives. As such religion is something I find hard time to roleplay, I always go protestant as those benefits give me more options in my fun-seeking empire-building.

But really if reformed is meant to be the religion of trade/colonial powers it should give at least 20% tariffs and 10% trade income. I hope it gets buffed like that in EU4.

Its always better to convert, the tolerance idea is an idea that could be taken by a more useful one.
Stay Catholic for lower stab costs, missionary cost is negligible considering how much more stable your nation will be with one faith.

burn all the heretics to restore order (and tax efficiency)

I never ever convert and I almost always have full narrowmindedness.

I like to stay catholic rather than convert because by the time the reformation happens money is not that much of a problem anymore and I would much rather have the infamy reduction from the cardinals

I once went full tolerant playing protestant TO->Prussia which was fully innovative. I just despaired to convert a huge empire with mishmash of orthodox, reformed and sunni provinces with a wholly inadequate number of missionaries. My state religion was maybe 30-40 % of total population. So I took all tolerance ideas and things more or less stabilized. It should be noted that I did not plan it at the beginning, and pretty much did not plan at all. So I guess tolerance ideas have sense when you already ended in such mess. Otherwise it is more efficient to stay uniform.

I tend to play my games as hyper innovative so I have to play religiously tolerant.

In my Huron game, I had more Catholics, Reformists and Protestants in my Confederacy then Shaminists pretty much as soon as I started taking over European Colonies (and suprisingly I had very few religious problems) (State religion was at best 20% of the population by 1821). I even had a few proviences of Islamics off in Indonesia.

When you pick ecumenism, there's this really annoying event that converts a random state-religion province into a heretic one. When missionaries are rare, or you actually can't get any this can be incredibly annoying.

Unless I'm playing as a nation like Spain, Portugal, an Italian state, or Austria, I tend to play a religiously tolerant mid-to-late game with my European states. Specifically Great Britain, the Netherlands, a German state, even France. If I play as someone like the United States, I make it a point to adopt ecumenism & humanist tolerant to increase the stability of the state overall. I find it gels the population better. If I am playing an early or early-mid game, I love the wars of religion that can sometimes spring up and provide a challenge to the overall coherence of the realm.

I see converting the heathens to the true faith as a mercy, what with them doomed to face Hell and all. Why be tolerant when you can be Catholic?

Heretics? Heathens? Wipe them out. All of them.

I love turning as much of the map my religion's color as possible - which is usually Catholic Yellow, although I once enjoyed turning as much of Asia Shinto as I could. I do this to the extent of taking Unam Sanctam and using the Cleansing of Heresy CB on anyone who goes Protestant or Reformed during the Reformation - provided I can defeat them. I even once bled myself white reverting Sweden to the True Faith - although I'd been assigned a mission to do so.

It just amuses me so much, in addition to being an efficient way to run a country.
