How often do you mint? I normally always mint to around 0,1. my reasoning being that the minted money will go to improving my economy thus giving me a profit in the end. But is the 10% less in tech biting me in the ass later? Or is it viable to mint.

If you have enough money to not need to mint then don't. This generally isn't the case until mid-game or later for most nations. though. If I am cash limited (as opposed to magistrates, force limits, or having nothing much to use it on anyway) I will generally mint to around a -.2/year level considering my sliders and master of mint so if I need to burn inflation due to an event it doesn't massively alter my budget. if that leaves me with too much cash I mint less.

That being said, if the alternative is taking a loan I will mint 100% for a month or 3 and deal with the inflation later.

I love minting however without adding to inflation :)

I always take National Bank as my first NI and hire a master of mint and keep the slider at 0 added inflation. So i will be making money from day 1.
On my current game circa 1600 i can mint up to 0,26 (National bank+Master of Mint+Centralization) without taking any inflation. I am currently the nation with the highest income (close to 9.000 on the ledger)

For a small country at start a master of the mint costs more in salary than he allows you to mint without inflation.

At the start I generally ramp up minting so far as to gain 0.05-0.2 points of inflation/yr, depending on the country and circumstances. I use this money to build an army and a trade empire and get my expansion going. Once I have more income I gradually reduce minting, and of course I add a high level Master of Mint at some point. In a typical game, inflations peaks around 5-10%, and goes back to 0 somewhere in the 16th century.

For OPM's, minting is more crucial than for larger nations. Some rich majors with good missions or CBs don't ever need to mint a ducat at all.

Somewhere between the early game and the midpoint of the game in a grand campaign it always becomes necessary to mint all of my tech income for just a month every few years. It is at that point that I have started to have more than enough opportunities to spend all of my money without noticing, and I hate taking loans; I would rather deal with a small bit of inflation now and then.

Minting seems preferable to taking loans (for me). So I mint like mad during the first phases of the game to gain a leverage, and then de-mint when I'm rich and powerful enough.

What i do is minting in a way to balance the gain and inflation, sometimes hiring a master of Mint ( when i need more money, so there's comes the Inflation).
and when i play with a Non-western country mint helps to reduce the speed of the improvement of techs thus helping to westernize.

I only mint if I'm in a dangerous war or need to avoid a loan. Personally I think it's overpowered and that inflation should rise more quickly from using it. Instead of 1% per year, maybe make it 2 or 3. Anyone know if this is moddable?

Inflation is only a number. By 1600 it'll start to take care of itself anyway. National Bank is a waste of a National Idea and the malice event for it (-200 ducats or +5 inflation) can be worse than all the benefits it provides for certain nations/situations.

20 inflation is worse than 0 inflation, but if that 20 inflation helped you build a vast or powerful nation and let you build the infrastructure that means you need never mint again, then the opportunity cost has worked out in your favour.

I think you can change it, yes. Somewhere in the commons folder.

For a small country at start a master of the mint costs more in salary than he allows you to mint without inflation.
that would depend a lot on how much money you make of trade

indeed, however the faster you can get it under control the better, as long as the investments pay of its pretty much always worth it to collect a slight amount of inflation early on

Unless I play insane countries, I mint only if taking a loan is the alternative. Instead of minting, I prefer to keep a smaller army (usually way below the force limits), which makes the game more fun and helps the economy. The worst thing with minting is that every ducat minted is one taken from research, and as we know the price for 100 research ducats is 200 from the treasury.
