Im starting this thread because quite honestly its the same old ball bags you see at every release. A load of old schools, screaming from the roof tops about how "dumbed down" stuff is, or how "xyz" country should be better than it is in the game.

Its not even released yet and people are going ape shit! Fortunately and unfortunately that is the sign of an amazing game, either before or after. There is no question that EU3 was one of the most amazing strategy games ever. Period. If any one wants to question that, I am gonna ask you why you are still here 5 years later, so be prepared for that.

Anyway, as usually happens with these strategy games, a new release comes out and the original crowd scream "dumbed down" and "you have made it mass market" and my personal fave "itz so shitz, bring out the COD crowd enit". Well fortunately im a 31 year old bloke, and maybe I should know better, but how would you have made EU4? im talking mechanics, game play, balencing the whole shibang!

Im not a fanboi.....well i cant be, I'm far too old, but my opinion is that the game has evolved, and for the better. I have played 4 demo playthroughs, and the game is more dynamic, demanding, intuitive, exciting, and difficult than the last one by a long shot............so whats not to like?

I wouldn't say it's difficult for pro eu3 players I say it's a lot easier

but if we want a challenge we could pick the tribes or the north/south american tribes

even if it's easier I say it's still a lot of fun and I doubt anyone that loves the eu series will quit playing it

+1, all the nitpicking feels... rude? I just keep getting this image of an artist showing a painting to his friends and all of them saying things like, "Eh... it's great and all... I guess... but this leaf on this tree over here in the background? Yeah, that one. Looks like shit and totally ruins the whole painting."

I think pointing out minute flaws just indicates how great everything else must be! If you have to criticize about a single leaf in a huge painting, it must either be a terrible leaf or an amazing painting.

The Paradox team doesn't need adulation, they know their product is working and marketable- otherwise they wouldn't be trying so damn hard to show it to everyone and take our money. What our criticism does is help them make it BETTER, presuming they take notice.

It's not even the nitpicks themselves that bother me, that's all fine and dandy. It's the vitriol and outrage that accompanies some of them when so-and-so minor culture isn't quite right, such-and-such feature or someone's pet-country isn't as overpowered as they want.

Completely agree with this and the OP. Like this analogy...
It's really a great game :)
Also I think the reason it seems easy to people (which I really don't agree with seeing how easy it is to get screwed as Portugal or Venice) is because of the later start date, and the fewer short-term penalties during the short demo time frame. If I understand correctly, it should be much harder in the long term.

Count me in as agreeing. I love what I have seen of the game so far, and it will continue to evolve. Playing from scratch in 1444 will be so grand fun.

The games in the EU-series are all masterpieces, and we love them so intensly. Thats why the debates get so over heated now and then, we all have our different opinions about how our favorite game should be made even better.

I have my own opinions there too of course, but I can't praize Paradox enough for making these grand, intresting and challenging historical strategy games.

Competely agree with this, there are so many new things that I do like, and so few new things that I don't.
And for the few things that you don't like, it's great that the game is as moddable as it is.

EU4 > EU3. By far. Sure everyone wanted something different changed, so people whine and moan about something not changed to their liking much more, and compare their "ideal game" and overlook that the game is a huge improvement and very fun.

Yeah, and the worst I read is people whining and complaing obviously because their old "exploitive" overpowered strategies arent working so good anymore. :) Paradox has made a good job in repairing many of the inbalances of EU3. Even multiplayer will be a grand new refreshing experience it seems, can't wait to test it out.

To play a bit of the devil's advocate, some of the worst outrage I've seen is actually directed against people who've made some small suggestions in a totally reasonable manner only to get a page of "JEEZ STOP WHINING THE WHOLE DEMO ISN'T OUT YET HOW DARE YOU POINT OUT A GENUINE FLAW". Not saying everyone is doing this, but quite a few. There's enough outrage to be spread out among all sides. Sometimes (usually) it seems that those people end up being heard the most.

And as a few people said above, a lot of us who are making suggestions do so precisely because we love Paradox so much - we know they listen to their fans. A lot of us preordered on the first day and will still love the game no matter what - but we'll have criticism and feedback regardless. I mean if I go to a bad restaurant, I won't bother filling out a survey or complaining on Yelp - I just won't go back. But Paradox is different - there's actually a chance of the product being improved through patch or expansion in ways that reflect what some of us post here.

Nice post - this sort of thing is why I love these forums so much; yes, we have our share of trolls etc., but far fewer than many game forums and lots more sensible people than most.
