I used this with my vassals... if they have a claim in a province occuped by me, I transfer occupation to them... so I save adm and diplo points for another provinces.

I was in a war with country C with my Vassal country B. I was about to annex my Vassal so I transferred a couple of provinces from country C to Vassal B so I'd avoid AE. It's like vassal feeding but missing out a couple of steps. I won the War, I got War goal province ( low AE) Vassal got 2 non war goal provinces (no AE for me) I later annexed Vassal B so essentially I got 3 provinces out of the War with no coalition.
Pretty sure giving provinces to your vassal directly in a peace still nets you AE.

There are many situations where it's better to transfer ownership. Typically you're going to pick one or two key allies early on in this game and it is in your best interest that those allies do well. If you're England allied with Sweden and you just occupied Skane, why would you want to keep that? It's more trouble than it's worth and it would be good for your ally. Marches are useful especially if you have a vassal with very good military ideas and you want to build them up and use them for warfare (think Brandenburg). I personally like having a powerful vassal so I don't have to micromanage every war I get into.

10) Designating as marches
1) Never used but can be usefull depending on situation.
2) Usefull when you can't create vassal in strategic area.
3) Always use. But another case is how it works :) In my games I used to have many vassals but they hardly follow that orders - there is something wrong with AI script here.
4) Never used but can be usefull depending on situation.
5) Usefull - especially to kill small armies marching through your land
6) Always !!!
7) Usefull and comfortable
8) Usefull but AI not always follow this and rather siege what they wan, not what you want.
9) Always !!! Another good thing is that when ally peace out, occupied provinces are mostly still occupied because most gets warleader's flag. Huge change and very important !!!
10) Never used but can be usefull depending on situation. I rarely use in my games, because I prefer vassal-anexation game and malus for changing march to vassal is HUGE !!!

1) Selling ships to someone - Never use
2) Creating a client state - Never use, but thats probably because in my European games, I'm not that far along while my main game is in Asia
3) Setting a vassal's war assistance mode - Never use, because most of the time I just want them to stay in their lands and not lose battles for me when I'm using a superiority CB
4) DoW in support for rebels - Occasionally, especially useful for getting early CB on someone you normally wouldn't have a CB on.

1) Selling ships to someone - Haven't used yet.
2) Creating a client state - Haven't gotten that far yet (took me a while to get used to the general changes to the game).
3) Setting a vassal's war assistance mode - I've tried it but I didn't notice a change in behavior so I stopped.
4) DoW in support for rebels - Never. Most people near me have more negative unrest than I can push them towards.
5) Sortie from sieges - Mostly in high level forts when random small armies walk over them. Not often though.
6) Mothballing fleets - Never since I often focus on trade fleets. I guess I will once I have a death stack fleet.
7) Army template - All day, everyday once force limits allow it.
8) Province siege objective for allies - I've done it a few times but it seems like the AI ignores it.
9) Swapping occupation - Often, especially when I siege vassal claims up.
10) Designating as marches - Never. Haven't needed them and they seem too limited since too much basetax hurts the bonus if I recall.

Marches have a basetax limits of 60 IIRC. Past that, they lose the bonuses and you're basically stuck with an unannexeable vassal.
Why does PI put in these arbitrary, hidden rules? Who cares if you build up a monster march? So now I just take the provinces myself. Big deal. Another thing for me to scan the text files for...hopefully it's mod'able.

Where do I find these 3 lol? I got Art of War but just started playing.

Mothballing fleets is the bottom-left button (or thereabouts) that looks like an anchor, on the interface when you have a navy selected (same place where you set them to trade/pirate/patrol).
Army template comes from the build interface (press B or use the button in the top-left near your nation's shield). Get to the 'units' tab, you'll see your military units, then mercenaries, then 'Create Template'.
Siege objectives for allies are, I think, on the province view.

For myself:
1) Selling ships to someone - Never
2) Creating a client state - Not yet, but seems interesting for late-game (I've played a few campaigns to the 17th c and moved to another)
3) Setting a vassal's war assistance mode - I've used it, but it seems pretty wonky to me so I generally let them do their own thing.
4) DoW in support for rebels - Not yet, but looks really valuable in some situations.
5) Sortie from sieges - Never
6) Mothballing fleets - I do use this, it's a nice feature. Early colonialism often just needs a few transports to move troops around, no need to pay for the big navy.
7) Army template - Yes, it's nice. I'm currently using a 5/1/4 setup, then combine to suit (i.e. two armies makes a 10/2/8, a nice fighting stack, using 3 or 4 when necessary)
8) Province siege objective for allies - Haven't really tried it yet, sounds useful though.
9) Swapping occupation - Happy to see allies and vassals swapping to me, but otherwise no.
10) Designating as marches - Not yet, but I have some ideas of where I would use it.

Allk of the examples showed so far in streams and such too have only been in the complete disfaviour of the one doing it. The AI seems to do it and tht is convenient for the player, but otherwise I do not see the need to use it. Marches are quite bad for the player too.
If you're not going for WC, transferring provinces is great for increasing trust (which makes it easier to call them into future wars) and having strong allies, as well as weakening enemies.

For example, I'm the USA and allied to France. Every so often, I fight Castille, and I want to weaken them and break their colonial empire. However, I can take their colonies at absurdly low WS costs and OE becomes a real limitation, so instead, I take a bunch of colonies (even 50% WS of them is usually some pretty killer OE) and feed France some mainland provinces. France is strong and happy and trusts me more (and is thus more willing to join my other, more distant wars), Castille is weaker, and I have lots of land without taking so much OE as to cause my country to implode. And if France takes over Europe and goes on an alliance breaking hissyfit, so what? I'm the USA, I have the largest navy in the world and the Atlantic Ocean between me and them, as well as a much larger tax base, manpower pool, and trade income.

I haven't used marches yet, but the purpose should be obvious. They're to act as attack dogs to help defeat and carpet siege your enemies. You might not be able to annex them easily, but they still count towards WC so long as they're your subject/
