Do you ever go for the "leading producer" on purpose?

After I finally finished my first WC I have been taking some more laid back games where I allowed myself to go semi-tall. I would still conquer, but only if there is something that is just too good to pass up.

Now with the prosperity mechanics and the ability to develop individual provinces you can actually boost the production of particular goods quite a bit. I used to never think about the leading producer thing (gives +10% production for that good) because I had so little control. But now I speculate in it - by dumbing DIP into some key provinces you can push yourself over the edge and get that extra little bonus.

Does anyone else ever do this? I have 1550 hours under my belt, but its not something ive been paying attention to until now.

Depends which, if I can i'll hunt Cloth (Merc cost) and Grain (Land Limit), rest are more of a nice background bonus. Spice when being Theravada can be nice too, stacking up Advisor cost reduction.

Hunting them Early / Mid game can be the edge between a good and a great spot, before you can snowball out of control.

Being the leading producer of Cotton gives additional yearly settlers. If you're the first to the Caribbean and you are lucky/savescummy enough to get the cotton bonus, you'll become an absolute powerhouse of colonizing.

I often try to get some bonuses from whatever trade goods I can get trade bonus, and besides what @Kissya and @Baldwin XI said I would try Wine (global_unrest = -1) and salt (land_maintenance_modifier = -0.10). If colonizing America, try also cocoa (manpower_recovery_speed = 0.05). Nice from Africa to get Ivory (diplomatic_reputation = 2).

Id just like to point out that the "trading in" bonus and leading producer is two different things.
Trading in: Highest market share (min 25%): Get the bonus of that good
Leading producer: You produce the most: Produce 10% more of that good.

Um ... Guys? Why are you talking about the trade leader bonuses when the OP is talking about the production leader bonus. (which is just a 10% goods produced modifier for all goods you're the production leader of)

Edit: seems I type slow.
