Ive got a few hours to the game and recently ive decided that being an evil slavedriver isnt really necessary and i should try to give my Colonists all the luxuries and comfort they could possible ask for, so ive started building a few of the more expensive stores.

But then i noticed the daily(sol) use and its 7-8 Electronics/Polymers! I would have to dedicate half my Domes to produce the two to even supply them all!

It seems insane, if you math the weight down, each Colonist visiting an Electronics store is using 80KG worth of PC parts!

So i was wondering. Why would you ever build those?

They are possibly useful because of how comfort works. However they aren't worth it. I'll fully explain from the start.

So what happens is periodically colonists get a desire. It'll be one of the desires determined by their job and traits. So a botanist likes luxury, the gamer trait adds gaming and so on. Check the wiki for the full list. If they can get a service that fulfills the desire they do not lose comfort. If the service quality is higher than their current comfort then they gain comfort. This means as long as you have one service that has high quality every colonist that the service meets one of their desires will eventually max out their comfort. The art and electronics store can top 100 service quality and thus get colonists to maximum comfort.

The reason they aren't worth it is because of the Hanging Garden spire. It provides 100 service quality of the park services. Every colonist specialization has a service desire that parks fulfill. So putting Hanging Garden in all your domes is simply the best strategy. With that you don't need the stores. As long as they get the service they won't lose comfort. So you can use a lower quality service like a casino.

I have done all the achievements in Surviving Mars, so have played a few hours and I almost never build electronic stores. When I do its rather late game and mostly for fun. Those other art buildings, is a bit more often, but no, you dont really needs them.
