Do we need a new way for transporting troops over the sea?

I do have the feeling that EU4 would be better off with a different, maybe more indirect, system to transport armies overseas.

1. You currently can easily transport massive armies to colonies and other countries which makes colonial wars much too easy.
2. Its a hassle to always demolish and rebuild transport ships when needed.
3. Most importantly, the AI can't handle it and routinly has most of its armies in colonies which leaves it very vulnerable to attacks and rebels (wors example I have seen was the mamelucks stacking 130k troops in a 3 dev colony island in the indian ocean).

Does someone has an idea what can be done about that?

Mothball fleets instead of demolishing them.
The AI got incredibly good at transporting troops compared to even recent patches. I wouldn't dare criticizing them after having my capital sieged by Brunei as Avaria.

As for your opening point... Being able to transport troops is an issue for you?

Historically transporting large amount of troops over the sea was very difficult, if not impossible and fraught with danger.
In EU4 you only lose a tiny amount of troops which regenerates in a month.

So?

Historically, attacking Russia during winter was a bad decision. Doesn't mean implementing 20% attrition for Russian provinces makes sense.

History is always a weak argument for that kinda thing. Especially when it doesn't make sense from a gameplay perspective.

The AI is fine at transporting troops now.

Don't delete your transports all the time. Why do that?

There is another way to transport armies overseas. Get enough Professionalism that disbanded units go back to the manpower pool. Disband the army you wish to transport. Rebuild it in the place you wished to transport it to.

make transports an off map pool that allows x amount of soldiers able to “march” across water.

I think it would help the ai manage ambhibious attacks better
Honestly, this. Or let other ships transport troops, too. (Probably make cogs dirt cheap and slow, galleys a bit more expensive, but let all ships transport troops. I mean, in history, they were all used for troop transport.)

I thought the OP was going to go differently with this topic.

Even though there is an automatic transport button, it still doesn't work all the time and I find the manual approach with attaching troops to transports to be tedious, esp if you're playing a lot of island battles.

In HOI4, transports (convoys) are abstracted and all you have to do to move a stack from port to port is like it's on land, as long as you have enough transports, you can just do it, and you don't have to worry where the transports are located.

But on the flip side, the naval invasions are much more tedious.

In HOI4, transports (convoys) are abstracted and all you have to do to move a stack from port to port is like it's on land, as long as you have enough transports, you can just do it, and you don't have to worry where the transports are located.

Never cared for it, but they have to do it that way with planes cause there's thousands of them and you just can depict that visually on a map.

Don't get me wrong, I like how EU4 armies and navies are well integrated on the same map, something HOI is a bit off with IMO. It's very straightforward just a little tedious at times with the transports.

In theory I want to have fleets set up pre-war that I can give orders to control the relevant sea zones after defeating the enemies navy I can then order the fleets to blockade .

In practice I just rally my whole navy into doomstack and sit it on a key sea tile

The question is: where? Over the ocean? Maybe. But for example on Mediterranean? It was no problem for all involved in this - OTT landed massive forces both on Rhodes and Malta and moved them back without problem. Other powers did the same.

In fact, what we have in game is perfectly historical as doomstack navy is what happened in this era and later - ships were always moving in massive blobs - remember Spanish Armada, or hundreds of galleys that clashed at Lepanto? All the way up to 2nd world war you generally wanted to have all your big ships in one, maybe two massive "doomstacks" while lights were doing raiding, scouting and all other duties.

The question is: where? Over the ocean? Maybe. But for example on Mediterranean? It was no problem for all involved in this - OTT landed massive forces both on Rhodes and Malta and moved them back without problem. Other powers did the same.

In fact, what we have in game is perfectly historical as doomstack navy is what happened in this era and later - ships were always moving in massive blobs - remember Spanish Armada, or hundreds of galleys that clashed at Lepanto? All the way up to 2nd world war you generally wanted to have all your big ships in one, maybe two massive "doomstacks" while lights were doing raiding, scouting and all other duties.
Yet in EU4 it does not matter if you want to transport the massive force on Malta, in South Afrika or Brazil.

By the way the "Other duties" are completely missing and also big ships were involved in raiding, etc. Only a fraction of the british fleet were stationed around france during the napoleonic wars for example.

The game can differentiate between inner seas (or whatever the exact name) and open seas. Perhaps attrition could be adjusted depending on which type it is. Hypothetically.

Attrition is a garbage mechanic, so I'd rather it not be used to fix anything. A better way would probably be some restriction on troop transport outside of inland seas.

I do have the feeling that EU4 would be better off with a different, maybe more indirect, system to transport armies overseas.

1. You currently can easily transport massive armies to colonies and other countries which makes colonial wars much too easy.
2. Its a hassle to always demolish and rebuild transport ships when needed.
3. Most importantly, the AI can't handle it and routinly has most of its armies in colonies which leaves it very vulnerable to attacks and rebels (wors example I have seen was the mamelucks stacking 130k troops in a 3 dev colony island in the indian ocean).

Does someone has an idea what can be done about that?
1. Why are they too easy? If you compare to history, wars in general are far too easy in the game (and probably any other game out there).
2. Why would you do that? You can mothball them (looks like you have Mare Nostrum DLC) if you care about the 0.05 ducats per transport.
3. This is not working as intended, and Paradox is working on a solution to fix this in patch 1.25. The issue was introduced with 1.23, so while waiting you can roll back to 1.22 to have a better working AI.
