Just think the analogy is quite useful, as one who has been in both industries. Software is still in 1902, really. It's somewhat paradoxical (woops!) - SW is, at one and the same time, a relatively new business, but also a mature one.
Fifty years from now, hardware will run most anything. Still love whathisname's comment about Java when it came out - "You can run your cellphone on Java. Can't run your cellphone on Windows."
