So recently I finally had the cash and was able to upgrade from the base game I got as part of the Kickstarter to the full Season Pass. I had an in progress campaign I was a few missions into and am now pushing deep into but I'm noticing none of the DLC content seems to be affecting the campaign. Now I completely understand it won't change story missions but even side missions and random contracts don't seem to be effected. Is this because I had started it before purchasing the DLC? Does the DLC only work in skirmish and career modes? I just don't understand why I'm not seeing any of the additional content.

Side and random missions are affect - also some of the new mechs appear in said missions. flashpoints only after ending the campaign. But Battle+, Urban and tropical biome appear in the side and random missions also. Story / campaign are the same, not affect at all.

Flashpoints won't show up until after you've beaten the campaign, but you should still see some effects in side missions from new mechs/biomes/vehicles. A quick option would be to, in the Star Map screen, there should be filters for difficulty and biomes. Change it to select urban biomes, and travel to one of those planets; you should see at least some of the missions in the urban biome.

Yep they have like all others said already. New Mechs, Vehicles, Maps etc. will show up in the Side Missions (not in the Campaign-Missions) and on the Star-Map as well new Events etc. will show up in the ARGO / Leopard. You can uses the Black Market too now in the Campaign which is an other new Feature linked with an Event. That´s what I have seen atm. while Playing.
