Of course, most of the area of Hong Kong (the New Territories) was only leased. It was decided that Hong Kong island and the Kowloon Peninsula, the actual territories ceded to Britain Gibraltar fashion, wouldn't be viable without them. I do suspect though that the size of China's army played a part in the decision though!

True, very true!

We should probably have offered more of them British passports though-but despite what some people think it seems fairly clear that the majority had no intention of emigrating-giving them a safety net though would have been nice, given how the current administration is bringing the territory more and more in line with the current regime in China.

I think you can replace "British Indian Ocean Territory" with "Diego Garcia", which is the only signifigant isle. The Brits keep trying to sell it to the Americans, but India always throws a fit and threatens to invade if they allow the American into the Indian Ocean.
BTW... Don't they speak Spanish in Gibralter"? Anyways, when the E.U. (not the game) really develops... I guess Gibralter and Spain will once again be reunited!

Well, I was referring to the whole island chain.

As for Gibralter, i've been there not so long ago and, whilst their is an obvious Spanish speaking population, the majority language is English.

damn liechtenstein should unite with austria and suiss with france. Then let's inherite France GB, they like each other anyway, give that small königsberg area to poland or Germany, shake a little, cook it all for 20 years on balkan temperature, unite spain, Italy and malta through some laughable incident, recreate the Kalmar union and we are likely to see EU some day being a state in which Gibraltar is a part of the district called spain.

Right! "Technically" is the key word. As long as the whole facility does not get transfered or escalated...the Indians feel safe. Though, it seems all this cold-war policy is getting turned on its head, as India and the US just announced they would be intensifying their military connections.
