So I did try the steps in his video and after several restarts was indeed able to emulate what he did.
Below is my situation after 60 years and I thought I'd share my findings.
The below was based on what he did or what he talked about doing in the video. I think I've played past that point now. ( I took different ideas, Offensive and Religious)
- You can indeed keep Trier in alliances if they only rival two electors. You just need a diplo advisor and send a gift and religious bretharen.
- Keeping four Privileges in aristocrats does indeed avoid elective monarchy when PU'ing Poland. Good idea
- With Lithuania you can easily beat Hungary and Austria. I disbanded HRE in about 2.5 years.
- As always things don't always go the same way. Hungary allied Otto's which made things harder so I actually didn't go to war with Otto's early which allowed them to get stronger. The above screenshot is actually my first Otto war. More on that below.
- Giving all Ruthenian lands to Golden Horde then taking them back later was a great idea. It was easy to retake those lands back, gave good eco bonuses early game, and allowed me to change to Orthodox. It also reduced Lithuania to make it cheaper to annex later.
- I am going to form Ruthenia just because I can once I hit Admin 10 but that's not for another 15 or so years. However I'm not sure how optimal this is, I have to avoid stating or even de state some core lands so I can get my Ruthenian culture to 50%, this means I have a lot of territory rather than states which is hurting me. I'll see how worth it it was later.
- I am winning the above war as you can see but this was down to bad AI more than anything. I declared once Otto's attacked Qara Qoyunla so they were distracted and I rushed down the Balkans and peaced out Hungary. This is AI target fixation where they go after the weakest targets rather than the biggest threat. I assume this is what happened as I couldn't see there forces. When they tried to march through Ukraine I moved most of my forces up that way, they then saw I was vunerable in Greece so turned their armies around and went to attack that way. I just redeployed my troops. So they actually have 124,000 troops still, and are still a huge threat. However I have now been able to call in France so they are finally outnumbered.
- It will probably take me another two wars to remove them as a threat. I intend to take provinces to release Byzantium and Bulgaria for now. I don't need any more none accepted cultures thanks. This brings me to my biggest observation.
**All my expansion up to now and even my future expansion plans are outside the HRE, why did I disband it? There was no need in this playthrough, by the time I core and state up as a Ruthenian empire I will have no issues steam rolling it anyway.**
