Do planes carrying out ground missions deal damage to enemy air wings in the region?

In other words, do attack stats of planes carrying out ground missions do anything?

yes, they do 2 things: reduce disruption if the escorts didn't reduce it yet. And shoot back.. Probably the CAS can shoot other CAS, not just the fighers attack them, but not always.

But gun on CAS, and especially TAC, strategic bombers have agility penalty, so get them but not at the cost of reduce ground attack.

Thank you for the reply. Is there a formula somewhere that describes the "shoot back" part? Or do planes carrying out ground missions do air damage like planes carrying out air superiority mission except without the air superiority score and disruption/escort effect?

Just the same formulas with fighters in wiki, but fighters (planes with higher attack) shoot first. For example there are 300 enemy fighters, but our detection rate is 33%. So we detect 100 enemy fighter. Up to 300 our planes can shoot at it. If we have 200 fighters and 200 CAS, then 200 fighters and only 100 CAS will shoot. That's how I understand the wiki.

Below gives you an idea of how air missions work and when the planes will engage. Basically there is a priority list and when giving wings multiple missions they will execute one mission per mission opportunity (3 times a day?), in the order shown.

Multiple missions[edit | edit source]

Wings with multiple assigned missions will fly exactly one of the selected mission types per mission opportunity. The mission flown will be the first one in priority order, as shown in the left-to-right order of the buttons in the air UI. Mission efficiency bonuses (e.g. from air doctrines) only for that mission type get applied to the wing for that mission.

To perform multiple missions simultaneously, create multiple smaller wings and assign a wing to each individual mission.

Most missions are conditional, in that planes will only fly if there is a known target at the time a wing mission is being chosen. Some missions will always fly. Targets are checked in each of the air zones assigned to the air wing, checking provinces within range of the air wing. If there are no appropriate targets for a mission type, the mission selection process will continue to the next lower priority mission. The first mission with a valid condition is the only mission flown by that air wing during that mission opportunity. Since many of the conditions during play are dynamic, wings may fly different missions at different types, producing multiple types of results. If one of the assigned missions has a condition that's "Always executes", no later mission in the list will ever be executed by that wing.

In the table below, determine the mission that will be flown by a wing with multiple missions selected by reading the missions from the first line downwards, stopping at the first mission where the condition is true.

Mission Execution Priority
MissionCondition
Pilot ExercisesAlways executes
Air SuperiorityAlways executes
Close Air SupportGround battles are in progress
InterceptionEnemy bombers are detected in an assigned air zone
Strategic BombingAt least one undamaged building, including state buildings in partially covered states (if any)
Naval StrikeEnemy ships are detected
Kamikaze StrikeEnemy ships are detected
Port StrikeEnemy task force in port
Logistics StrikeEnemy divisions or air wings are receiving supply from a supply node
Air SupplyAt least one friendly division with a non-zero supply consumption is present
Naval MinelayingAlways executes
Naval MinesweepingAlways executes
Air ReconAlways executes

*Edit Sorry, I misread your question. This does not answer your OP.

If you question is simply, do bombers shoot back, the answer is yes.

Again, according to the wiki

"Air wings sortie in descending order of air attack and agility against detected enemies, so fighters and heavy fighters will generally do most of the damage dealing. If enough enemies are detected, bombers can also deal air damage though."

It is simple enough to test. Load up a save, put all your bombers on CAS and keep all your fighters on the ground. Watch the battles and see if any enemy fighters are shot down. For testing purposes, It might work better if you make a fighter bomber, by simple adding rocket rails or bomb locks on a fighter and then use your fighter bombers as CAS and keep all your other fighters on the ground. Enemy fighter losses should show up quicker.

The Air Mission from WIKI. If I understand this correctly- when defending your territory, you should have your fighters on Superiority AND Intercept so that when there are no bombers around, they just sit on runway and do not burn fuel or have accidents. Whereas if you had them only on Air Superiority, they fly all the time and burn fuel and have accidents? Is this correct? Thank you

PS - I always assumed that if you had more than one mission button selected, it performed each mission less effectively.

Yes, but intercept for land deep inside, not on the frontline.
And Air superiority often have better mission efficiency than Intercept, to kill more TAC and Strat Bombers.
Now we can only select Air superiority OR Intercept, not both.
