Agree. But it requires great deal of self restraint no to read these threads.

When HoI was coming, I tried to restrain myself from reading too much about the tricks. Once I got the game, I cranked the difficulty directly up to VH/F in order to steepen the learning curve. Unfortunately back then HoI was still 1.00 or 1.01, making it far too easy - after I had conquered the world with Germany, USSR and Italy I got this dreaded "Been there, done that" feeling and was never again able to really enjoy the game.

The problem is that I'd love to get Vic as soon as it hits the stores, but if the early versions are too easy, it may spoil the game for me. On the other hand, if I wait til Vic has been patched to 1.05, I have probably read already through all the faq's and know exactly what to do straight from the beginning - and that is not good either.

A difficult situation for sure.:)

Manuals and 1st games

The biggest "flaw" with manuals is the fact, that they arrive simultaneously to the game. So there really is only the time during install where I peek at the manual, as soon as I can, I start playing.
Only on the next day on the way to work or so do I really READ the manual. Then combined with a first impression of my trial an error method of the first playday I then start to really play in earnest. ( Thats why I never take my favourite country for my first trying game ).

My first EUII was Spain, and rather cool. I did play as historically as possible, not involving in Europe, & steamrolling Americas. Hell I did even not know I could invade my neighours with the ToT!!!!! But, of course, gold mines & inflation did screw my game, & I ceased it in early 1700s.

Knowing the effects ot Tot, I'd have been faaaaaaaaar more powerful.

I just wanted to share this thought.

We all know what this game is about, we know what to expect from it, most of us have played EUII .

...

Once we start to get into the Tips and Tricks of the game and start to memorize the exact mathematical relations between two elements/aspects of the game we will play "different" kind of games. This process is unfortunatly not reversible.

So my advice to everyone is read only the interface explanation part of the manual and plunge into the game and appreciate every single moment of your first game.

Keep up the good work Paradox I am very enthusiast about Victoria.

I agree. Min/maxing and calculating will inevitably set in, even with roleplaying.

These boards have long been infested by 'EU2 vs HoI' threads. After much debate, the only thing that we know for certain is that each game has a deticated fan base. :D

Once Victoria comes out, I am sure what we will be treated to the first 'Victoria vs HoI vs EU2' thread.

Anyway, my first HoI game was with Brazil. The game went pretty well but many of my soldiers died before I fully grasped the concept of low infastructure provinces. :) Also, I overran all of south america and was at a loss to explain my dramatic loss of IC. Then I noticed that my dissent was at 100%.

Agreed. That's the one main problem I had with EU and EU2...maintaining a world spanning empire was far too easy.
