By the way, I've always thought that the manual for EU2 has been good. I've seen people advising newbies not to read the manual, but to come here to the forums instead. I learned the basics of the game from the manual, and found it very helpful. I believe the Victoria manual will be even better, as you people has pointed out EU2-manual's weaknesses.

I think it's the opposite. They are underrated. Everybody says the manual is worthless (at least the members of this forum). The majority has the same opinion as you, I think. So it has to be me, who likes reading the manual on my bed, that can say "or is it just me" ;)

I agree with Ulyanov.
I do like to read the manual "on my bed" and not in front of my Pc looking at the game...
... but only after my first games.

It like first I like to through myself into the game and only THEN I like to rationalise and understand what I have seen.

I think that the reason the manual is often called worthless now is because the various changes made to the game from 1.00 to the latest beta are so massive that a fair amount of the information in the manual is now inaccurate.

I always read the manual cover-to-cover before I play the game.

My first game was as Poland; figuring it was a loit like Civilization I decided to declare war on the Tuetonic Order first thing.....and got trounced. I tried a new game....and got trounced :) It took me about 4 games before I could get through the first few decades in decent shape.

I still remember the first time I had any inkling of "higher stradegy"; I was playing as the Ottoman Empire and, following a nasty war, I realized that the Mamelukes were allied to Hungary and Poland. And so I decided to move troops to defend and attack in those regions as well......needless to say my chance of winning went up dramatically :) Damn, those were the days, I used to rush home from class just to play.

Yes, i know what u mean.

I however didn't restart the game, i tried like hell to win....

At one stage, the French had taken most of lower England, but i refused all offers of peace.....this is with Scotland attacking my northern army time and again.

I took the offensive in the north, and managed to get a peace with Scotland....then i remember, after my navy had virtually ceased to exist(French crushed it, i was so sore over the fact the French navy was better than mine:mad: ) but with perseverance, i kicked them out......losing Calais though.....

After that, i ignored the mainland, only meddling now and again, and took off after the New world. great fun, and huge fun fighting Spanish forces in the new world( they soon became my new enemy).

Then....me, Holland, and Prussia took the fight to the papists, in both the new world and the old.....

ok enough of that, i was just remembering having such a great game, especially since i stuck with it even through the losses.

I still say that my favorite game had to be my EU2 game as Hungary. THAT was fun, at my height I managed to strentch from the Baltic to the Balkans, and I still managed to get myself killed in the end :)

I like it when games have tooltips, and you can learn the basics from them. I usually read the manual in the car/bus/train on my way home from buying the game, and during the time it takes to install the game. After that, I just play, if I encounter any problem, I join a forum :) )

Anyways, this was a good reminder, and I'll try to keep myself from giving up in my first game.

*ahh memmories

I remember my first game of EU 1 as Russia, after having a really easy going for the first 120ish years, colonozing to the pacific, I decided to kick some...SWEEDISH butt. How was I supposed to know what CRT meant anyway, and that I was two or three levels behind; or that cavalry in mountains not a good idea, and that minting 100% of your money from 1492 to 1792 was not a good idea?:eek:o

Taking on Sweden in a Swedish produced game is also not a very good idea... :)

And as for the rest of this discussion...I never played EU 2 that much, and I am not that experienced in these types of games. I´m glad for that. It is much more enjoyable to be fumbling in the dark at least a little bit when playing strategy games.

You're right, I'm really going to have to exercise some crazy self-control in order to keep myself away from peeking at the event files. If I can keep myself away from any maps as well, then maybe I'll have the same 'virginal' experience I had when I first started playing EUII :)

I read so much of the EU1 forum before I got it (I had a three week wait) that I knew a lot by the time I started playing. Still I did the tutorial and colonised as Eire from Spain to Persia and everything in between. I guess there was forewarning what type of player I was going to be....;)

Personally I think that that little bit of knowledge before starting really helped. It didn't spoil it, I was up for hours having lots of fun, even if my 56mb RAM didn't keep up. :p

I think it will be a good idea to at lest sort of know how Victoria works, after all by the looks of it it looks quite deep. And I doubt that you really can spoil paradox games after your first game. There are so many different ways of playing that are all good that it doesn't matter if you find one really good way of strategy, you can find another. :D
