So I had this idea that I would give all cities in each duchy to one mayor. This makes it easy for said mayor to upgrade his cities very quickly since he has a bigger income. However it occurred to me that I had just given this one guy 6 cities and he only has a stewardship of 4, so if I were to play him I would be over my limit (assuming I could play as a mayor). Does this mean that instead of boosting production, as was my goal, it will now hinder it because of demesne overages?

Any help would be appreciated.

1st, no you cannot play as a mayor.

2nd, as no one can play a mayor, I dunno. I think they do though, I wouldn't see as to why not.

They do. A Mayor (Baron rank) has a base Demesne limit of 1, and gain 1 more at Legalism II. In addition to this comes the Stewardship bonus.

Essentially, giving out more than two cities to one Mayor is counterproductive, unless you want to micromanage them to ensure good Stewardship.

To check the effect click on the County where one of the Mayors cities are, then click the Shield of the City to arrive at the Demesne view of the Mayor. Hover over the demesne line of the Income field to see max Demesne and effect on Tax.

You can i did it in the past.In fact their limit is 2-3 unless they have high stewardship. If they do then you will have to marry them with a high stewardship wife. You can see their demesne limit by going to their primary tittle menu and check the demesne income. If you hover your mouse over the income for a few seconds their demesne size will appear

When i conquered a new city(from infidels) i would give the city to one of my direct vassals mayors(they had their primary tittle in my counties). Then i would give the rest of the county to a man of my preference. So i could keep the benefits of high levies and the direct money from the mayor.

BUT...with the new patches republics gain HUUUUUUUGE tax bonuses(+25% for cities held by republics +15% if coastal +100% for the capital of the republic). So money-wise it is better to give these cities(especially coastal ones) directly to doges(mayor-dukes).They pay you the taxes (including the bonuses of +135%) they have far greater demesne size(since they are doges) and it is easier to control a few doges than many lord-mayors.

You sir, gave me quite the scare. As a matter of fact I use that as a strategy to reduce the micromanagement needed in the realm. The size is the same as with counts in your realm, I think, in the BE with laws @1085, a mayor can have up to 6 in his realm, according to the province ledger. I expect this to vary accordingly. Of course the advice on how to check this for yourself is accurate. Thanks.

The mechanics of this are quite interesting to me too. Ok, we get now how to check the limit for ourselves.

1. but when this mayor, which is my direct vassal, has one of the cities in a county which is my direct vassal, or the vassal of my vassal?

2. what happens when #1 applies to a county which is not in my realm? apart from pissing people off you might not want to go to war too.

3. is the story with byshopies the same?

The formula for max Demesne size is 1 * Rank Tier (1 for Baron, 5 for Emperor) + Stewardship bonus + 30% for Gavelkind + Legalism.

The base is therefore 1 with no bonus from Gavelkind (since it's a Mayor) and only one possible from Legalism (at Legalism rank 2). So to have anything more than two, you need higher Stewardship, but since the Mayors are created entirely randomly whenever one dies, it's highly inadvisable to give them more than the MINIMUM they can hold, lest you get trouble later on.

Creating a Lord Mayor changes this somewhat, in that they start with a base 2 and can get up to +2 more from Legalism (at Legalism Rank 1 and Rank 3), so one Lord Mayor can comfortably hold every city in almost any County.

Stewardship fluctuates too much to be counted on is my point.

1) he is still your vasal and your vasal gets a -25 (?) relatione hit
(if you did mean if he stays your vasal... this depents where his "first" city is... you can see that on the charakter page... the title listed first.. if you give the county with his "first" city away he wont be your vasal anymore)

2) he stays your vasal...

3) yes, i ussally have 1 bishope gover 4 byshopies
