Yeah, it's costly and dangerous.
I just don't care that much about which religion is dominant unless I'm playing an elector in which case you can switch anyway. I know you can use it to snag lots of land but I find I can do that anyway whilst everyone else is distracted by the league war. Sometimes you can even take free cities without having to fight the Emperor.

Don't feel too bad, in my experience Austria, if it gets the Burgundian inheritance becomes a monster. I had a recent game as Livonia, going for the Almost Prussian Blue Achievement, and I ditched Austria as an ally purposefully right before the league war started so that the protestants would win it, and then I could dismantle the remains for easier conquest. The protestants had Bohemia (as leader), France (somewhat weakend by Spain, but still potent), the Ottomans (in their full glory) and a bunch of HRE OPMs. Austria had no significant allies after I left them, only had a 4 province Hungary as a PU, and a few catholic HRE members in his league. He must have prayed hard to RNJesus, because all his sieges seem to have worked out better, while the others struggled. One of his stacks zerged France with the OPMs, the other pingponged between sieging down Bohemia and then swinging back to relieve his besieged forts from the Ottomans. He played as skillful as a player would have done in that situation, and everything hooked up just right for him. By the end he had no manpower, depleted stacks, but still managed to withstand the Ottoman onslaught just long enough to make France spit out Champagne, get a few of the Hungarian cores back and end up with the Peace of Westphalia as the end result.

My computer starts to lag a lot. I assume that happened back then too because so many armies were moving around that people used all their brainpower keeping track of what was going on and as a result had to do everything in slow motion.
It reminds me of an old graphic bug: when Austrian armies got defeated and had to retreat all across the map, the sprites of their units formed a massive swirling mess, blocking the screen no matter how much you zoom out.

Ah, the fun times.

Or the consequances of Leviathan hotfix 1.31.1: a totally empty map. Guess everyone move on Mars in fear of Gothic Invasion.
One time I loaded a save from a very early version of the game on a newer version and lots of random provinces were uncolonised. Surprisingly I could actually load and play as countries but the world was a bit broken.

The same problem. My campaign is around 1650 now and I have those "long ticks" when about once in 1-2 months a certain tick takes seconds to calculate and the game freezes for those seconds. Even though I much improved the performance of the game and it was very smooth until mid-17th century :(
Playable, but decreases fun by a lot.
