Do I attack the Papal States ?

Playing as Spain, third most powerful state and I have integrated Naples. But some Neapolitan territory is 'Papal'. The Papal State's only allies are a couple of minor Italian powers. Could still prove a messy campaign however.

As a good Catholic state do I reclaim Neapolitan territory, or turn my ambitions elsewhere ?

Only you can know your ambitions... But if you can wait until the age of absolutism, the pope won't be able to excommunicate you after the war. That can ruin your fun for a while, so act accordingly.

A good catholic should also try to be near god, and if you kill other catholic there is more chances that you become the pope yourself. There's many ways to be a good catholic

Conquering Rome as a catholic is also bad. Taking the other provinces as a catholic just means the pope will hate you, but no one else will care much.

as Spain focusing on Italy is kind of useless unless you want to go for all trade nodes feeding into Genoa also.

With new trade node in Valencia, you can turn Sevilla into end node. Why waste resources conquering Italy?

I'd turn my ambitions elsewhere, unless you want to play a historical campaign.

Conquer all stuff upstream in trade for Sevilla, and go for Philipines so to speak rather then Pope.

I generally avoid attacking the pope until I have enough AE that he is going to hate me anyway. Eventually you are going to want everything but Rome, though. It's rich land in good trade nodes.

In the late 17th Century I forced the Pope to hand back the part of Italy that was taken from Naples, but only that. At this stage I have overtaken the Ottoman Empire and Spain is the leading power.

Who is the Papal Controller? You won't necessarily get excommunicated unless it is a country that doesn't like you. Also, I don't think the Pope can excommunicate countries he's at war with or in a truce with, but I'm not 100% sure.

He definitely can't excommunicate you if you are DotF, which is something that synergizes well with Spain anyway.

I say go for it.

I usually only attack the Pope if it's for 1 province (Avignon), if I know I can pay for my sins, or if it's late in the game and Excommunication doesn't matter.

Of course you should attack Rome, DEUS VU... no, no wait... erm. If you're going to the Mare Nostrum I suppose you'd need it ? Otherwise, death to the heretic scum ?

I'm pretty much waiting until the last year of the game to annex Rome so I don't have to deal with the penalty lol.

Nah, I am France, I like Catholic and Rome isn't worth changing my religion for when I'm set on conquering Moscow for now.

In my Venice save though, I did conquer Rome only when I was ready to form Italy.

I am Spain. I only wanted Neapolitan territory, for it is rightly part of 'Greater Spain'. Rome belongs to the Pope.
I have reclaimed Naples. If I build a cathedral in Naples that should placate him.
