As the title says.

To qualify, I'm not against sectors as a mechanic but is there a reasonable reason as to why a hive mind would use a governor to section off some of its population?

I'd guess that the mind would "overheat" if it personally took care of EVERY DRONE on EVERY PLANET. Thus where the semi-independent drones come in: they are able to take down some burden by taking care of the micromanagment, but are still completely incapable of opposing the Hive Mind.

No matter if it is biological, mechanical or magical Hive Mind, nothing can be so strong that it could efficiently control an infinite amount of objects. Everything should have a limit.

If the hive mind is effectively one large entity, there's a limit to the number of places its attention can be put at once. Sectors, and semi-autonomous governors who can separate off and handle some of that information load, would be important, just like how a lot of our own mental processing is done unconsciously.

I can respect the need for sectors for gameplay reasons, but I always figured that a hive mind was somewhat omnipotent and would have full control - otherwise who is this sub hive mind character controlling things against the will of the mind?

Also from a gameplay angle - would this be a way to tackle those who dislike sectors? (As hive minds also allow those to circumvent faction and ethics drifts)

We already know that Hive minds have autonomous drones to do leadership roles which suggests that they aren't omnipotent or need help to focus on a micro scale. Which could fairly easily justify sectors IMO.

Sure, which if anything supports the existence of sectors. Considering that each Cerebrate controlled their own brood which could easily be represented in Stellaris as sectors.

Aye, thats what I'm saying.

Although I would like for hiveminds to have no sectors personally, because it would change the playstyle. But I doubt that and I wonder what their max core systems number is.

Fair enough, and personally I don't mind having sectors because the micromanagement would be really killer for me when I have 20+ planets. If you want it I'm certain that the no sector mods will be updated quite fast.

I also think the micromanagement might work as a means to fill up the idle time in the midgame since hive minds don't have to think about internal politics and that cuts out alot of interesting midgame events, and may in fact be quite boring.I hope they added something to keep the midgame interesting for hiveminds. And why would a hivemind ever research happiness tech if they don't have to worry about it, so I hope there is some kind of mechanic there.

That just seems like a change that would piss everyone off, if you are one of the sector haters then you are forced to play Hive Mind to get the play style you want and lose access to the stuff non Hind Minds have like factions, psi etc. If you like sectors you would never play Hive Mind because you are forced to do all the tedious micromanagement that comes with that many planets.

Isnt that the point of a different playstyle though to offer a completely alternate way to play that some may prefer and others may not. Personally I play alot of 4x games (space empires specificlaly comes to mind, you manage 100's of planets in that game aswell without sectors (though you can enable an AI minister to do that stuff for you too) , some people like that.)

True but there shouldn't be difference for the sake of difference, as we've discussed having sectors can absolutely make sense for Stellaris hive minds. So give Hive Minds sectors and people who don't want them can get mods that rectify that issue, seems to be a win-win IMO.

Well, if the Hive mind does NOT use Sector, then I believe many, many, MANY would play as nothing but a HIve Mind, just to get rid of that game mechanic.

Or maybe a civic that enables or disables, though in single player non-sectored hieminds may end up being ridiculously OP if in the right hands and in multiplayer if someone has a real high APM ratio. heh, mods it is I suppose.

Yeah, this is one of those cases that mods really are the better option.

This is kind of my point for opening this up for discussion. I like playing diplomatic empires that will deal with internal politics (so I'm super excited for 1.5) and I feel that as time goes on sectors will get more live and become a really interesting mechanic.

But I also like to dabble with the other play styles too. Sometimes being the head of an elite oligarchy can be fun. I wondered if hive minds would be too radically different if you took away sectors from them, or whether it would be more fun to have complete control Aka: you are the hive mind.

To say that those who hate sectors would only use hive minds and vice-versa to me shows lack of imagination and openness of the player rather than bad design.
