I know non-accepted cultures do not assimilate in Protectorates, but do assimilate in States (if there are primary/accepted culture POPs there to assimilate them of course). But I'm not sure when it comes to Colonies -- does anyone know for sure?

So as long as your province:
1. Is not a core of a nation with a different culture to your own.
2. Has people of your culture living in it.
3. The POPs are educated and have most needs fullfilled.

then it SHOULD be possible.

HOWEVER.

I can't get the assimilation tooltip to pop up (when hovering over the culture of the POP in the POPscreen) if the province is not a core (of my nation) so it's possible that assimilation only happens when the province is your core.

I think the reason they assimilate in states but not in protectorates (or colonies?) is that states tend to get cored after a while. A colony cannot become a core (is_colonial = no is a trigger for the coring event).

It's entirely possible that I'm missing something, but this is what I found.

Would this be something that can be figured out from the game files (i.e. not hard-coded)? I would look myself, but my gaming PC is currently inaccessible, and I'm not familiar enough with the game variable names to be certain of the meaning and whether it is referring to a Protectorate or Colony or State.

The wiki shows the formulas but makes no mention of Protectorates vs. Colonies vs. States being a factor:

When in game, select a province and go to the population screen of that province. Hover over the culture of a non-primary pop. In a state, this gives a pop-up tooltip showing why (or why not), and how fast the pop is assimilating. In a colony this pop-up tooltip does not appear. Thus, I figure it might be disabled.

If there's cores of other nations that have a certain pop as accepted or primary culture it is VERY hard to assimilate. And you also always need a target pop. So if there's artisans that would assimilate and there is no artisan pop in the same province it won't happen. If you, however, get a province with a pop that doesn't have a core there it is much, much easier.
Of course also depends on your policies (ruling party) and, in a way, religion.
Interestingly enough it seems to be possible to assimilate pops by having them change their profession. Example: If you have a craftsman focus on Austria-Hungary's Galicia the amount of South Germans will gradually rise since people who want to become craftsmen in a state with only one craftsman pop they will be added to that regardless of culture.

OK, I noticed something when I took a closer look myself. When I loaded up the UK in 1836, I found examples of Irish POPs living in Britain, and a tiny number of them had some assimilation, while the rest said "no current assimilation" and then a second later it showed the calculations where I could see why. (the biggest problem is it is in Europe or Asia). However, when I looked at parts of Maritimes (which had cores for UK and Maritime Union) where there were French Canadians and even Afro Americans (neither of which have cores) that should be candidates for assimilation, that say "no current assimilation", but more significantly, no detailed calculations popup explaining why -- I found this was the case both when it was a Protectorate and also when I upgraded it to a Colony and ran the game for a month. This suggests that the game does not even contemplate assimilation for Protectorates or Colonies.

What mod is that? I've never seen the Maritime Union tag in either vanilla nor PDM. Your Afro Americans not converting might have been because there's no British pops there, no?

Edit: PDM has the Maritime Union. And in the case of that mod assimilation is slow due to the fact that African American has a special -20% chance of assimilation so that blacks don't suddenly become Yankees or Dixies.

That may be true, but my point was that the calculations don't even popup in Protectorates/Colonies, whereas in Britain, the Irish weren't assimilating, and the popup shows you why -- so at least in PoD mod, it only contemplates assimilation in States.

I should see if I can find a case where there's a State without that country's core, to see if the game requires both statehood and cores in order to even consider assimilation.
