I have been curious about this since I started playing the game again with HttT. It seems that the Banker advisor, the one that reduces interest, doesn't work; that or I misunderstand how it does work.

I accidentally took out a loan. The interest was 1.9/month. I used my cultural tradition to hire a level 5 Banker (-5% Interest). After 2 full months I am still paying 1.9/month in interest. The rest of the numbers seem to add up, so it doesn't seem to be an interface issue.

I have a save if someone want to see it or decides it is a bug.

I don't know from experience, since I rarely take loans, but my guess is that they lower the interest when you take the loan, not while the loan is being repaid. This is how I always assumed they worked anyway, but I may be off.

strange if it works when taking a loan and not after, that means that you should take them before taking a loan, which is not always possible!

That does make them somewhat useless if so... Ideally you'd want an advisor to be employed over a period of time, not just hire him for less than a day while you take some loans ;)

In EU3 3.2 I had the same problem some time ago with a banker I hired to take care of a loan I took. But I had no effect on the loan itself, because I hired him after taking it.
However I also don't use loans so I did't care much of the bug.

I am.

Lets say the normal interest is 10% (again, I take loans very rarely)
Assuming you have 3 6 star bankers (each reducing some 5 or 6% interest) , would that mean that your interest would be negative??? If so, it would be an exploit... Loan 200, repay 190 or something...

You should use bankers when you're going to have to take out a loan, but the thing is a lot of the time that happens accidentally. I don't agree for realism reasons that a banker would lower interest immediately, because the contract was already written down, but for gameplay reasons it might be worthwhile.

I went back and tested it this morning and this is correct. They don't do anything once you have the loan so unless you carry one around with you at all times they are almost completely useless.

I have never intentionally taken a loan but playing as Portugal early in the game I haven't discovered the money tree yet so things have been tight.

EDIT: I swear in IN you could hire them and reduce interest payments after the fact.

Another thread turned into "Well I'm a far more skilled player than the OP so it doesn't concern me". Well done.
Nice to know that bankers are useless, anyway.

You sure? I'm almost positive I've had no interest loans in the past.

Just checked it to be sure. Hired 1x6* and 2x4* bankers and got 1% interest, so I beleive it is capped at 1 %.

BTW people, if you're taking loans of over 1k, and they are at 10% interest? Bankers are not useless at all, and the bonus is you can fire them immediately after taking the loan.

But how often does that happen? I don't know many people who intentionally take loans at all, much less a 1000d loan at 10% interest. I guess if there is the very rarest of occasions it isn't useless, just really close.

But thats the whole point. If the player reaches a point to need a loan, he propably won't be able to afford the banker as well.

Unless we are talking about these 1000 ducat loans...

I usually take large loans to cover the expenses for new buildings as they unlock (Markets, Temples, etc.) or when I need to replace my outmoded navy.

Also I try to play with no inflation gains, so I avoid minting like the plague.

Of course it really boils down to which nation you're playing.
