Do you know any of these flags?

"Drawn by one Dierck de Vrij, dated circa 1575-1580. The chart depicts Western Europe, but extends westward to southern Greenland (and the mythical island of 'Brazil'). An attractive piece, it is decorated with the flags of the various nations, and two ornate compass roses".

1. Scotland. I remember reading somewhere (possibly FOTW) that the blue and white saltire of St. Andrew was not used until quite late, though Scots were known to wear a white saltire on a black background sewn onto their clothes as an identifier. This could then explain the differing colours (by why the red as well as the black I am unsure).

But I do know that the blue and white saltire should not be flying over Scotland in 1419:D

"1503: the first certain use of a plain St. Andrew's Cross flag - but the field was red, not blue (the Vienna Book of Hours).
1512: the Lord High Treasurer's accounts mention the use of blue bunting.
1542: the first certain illustration of the St. Andrew's Cross on a blue field as we have it today (armorial of Sir David Lindsay)."

It could be, but it's weird, because by 1500 the four red bars were already well established. In middle ages the number of bars oscillated, but already in 1400 it was standard the number four (maybe the cartographer used an ancient source for the flags?)

Flag Number 9 should be Castilla-Leon, but it looks very differents, the bars in two of the quarters don't like at all like a tower (Castilla) or a lion (Leon), they look more like the bars of Aragon... but then?

Some quartered flags with the bars of Aragon are:

ca_1325.gif

(city of Barcelona)

ca_m1325.gif

(Mallorca)

But none corresponds to the place in which appears on the map.

From the map 10 must be Tangier and 11 Oran, 12 would be Tlemcen then, and I suppose 13 would be Algiers. Some Spanish posession remaining unconquered by Barbarossa would be 14 and Tunis would be 15

4 would be France now, wouldn't it?

(The Fleur-de-lis should be a dead giveaway)

White seems to have been another option to gold.

In the 1680s, there was not one official French flag; a number of different designs were in use, and it is not clear which La Salle's expedition might have carried. Some patterns which have been used in Texas include a white banner with three gold fleur-de-lis, a blue banner with three gold or white fleur-de-lis and a white banner liberally sprinkled with gold fleur-de-lis.

I've found other mentions of white, but many of them refer to background. But most americans (Quebec, US infantry, bou scouts) use white F-d-L, maybe they got the idea from somewhere?
