Recently I got ck2, learned how to play and so on and I have been considering about purchasing some of the DLCs. Now, let's just say I have $50 AUD to spend on purchasing 2 of the DLCs which cost $21.50, which ones would be most recommended to buy and why?

First of all, only buy on sale.
Usually on 50% off. Which means you can already get more.
Not need to rely on buying on Steam directly.
Look elsewhere. Currently sales on Humble Bundle, Fanatical, Macgamestore, Wingamestore, if i see correctly.

There a a gazillion threads as yours and differences to what folks recommend.
It kind of depends on what character you like to play next and how you prefer to play.

For an overview on what DLCs do:

Standard recomendations as far as i recall:
-Way of Life
(as it adds focuses; not required for me)
-Conclave
(not required for me either. Usualy recommended as it changes how laws and crown authority gets enacted and adds favours etc and as it can be confusing if you learn first without it)

To add to the above, Crusader Kings is about ... crusader kings. I.e. Feudal Christians (mostly Catholic) in SW Europe. If you're interested in other governments, religions or regions, you'll want the relevant DLC.

If there are governments/religions/regions you're not interested in, you will eventually get the DLCs, since enhancing stuff for your enemies will enhance your experience a bit, but it is of course a much lower priority.

I'd say Dynasty Starter Pack + Conclave is bare minimum. Unlocks Muslims, most of pagans (esentially, half of the map, especially if you play earlier starts), earlier start date, retinues, lifestyles and new laws.

For the record, Steam has a sale on various grand strategy games this weekend, including 50% on what looks like all the CKII DLCs.

Personally, I think I get the most out of Way of Life (ruler personalities), Old Gods (playable pagans, good start date), Legacy of Rome (retinues! and Byzantines), and The Republic (playable merchant republics). I enjoy playing in the East, so Jade Dragon and Rajas of India are also good for me, and Monks and Mystics adds quite a bit to the not-at-war play. Holy Fury if you like pagans, so you can customize your religion.

How is changing crown laws different with and without Conclave? I am getting into the game again after several years, The Old Gods was the last DLC I bought. Back in the day a King could change crown laws every 10 years so a long reign could get the laws I wanted (generally Medium Crown Authority with Agnatic/Cognatic Feudal Elective).

I also believe the Devs have cut down on the family eugenics (I arranged marriages of Genius to Strong so would always have an heir with one of those traits) and the ability to raise perfect children (years ago you could talk or beat any bad traits out of them). Does the game throw you a lot of curves now?

And not to diverge too much, but WTF is with the animals???

https://ck2.paradoxwikis.com/Realm_laws and https://ck2.paradoxwikis.com/Crown_laws would be good places to start figuring realm laws and crown laws. (Essentially, conclave splits the crown laws into their parts.)

Afaik, inheritable traits are only 15% likely to actually be inherited these days. So even with concubines and eldership, genius dynasties go regular...

I think the animals pop up in 'shattered world', if you choose to add them.

There is no crown law as used to.
Only the two..(edit after posting :...) whatever...see thelinks in above post.

You have a seperate council with your councillors who have voting rights, instead of vassals.
There is an additonal voting position for an honory title, called "Advisor" or similar.
The councillors have different type of voting behaviours.
See also :

- Voting results can be savely controlled by them owing you favours and you then using the individual
appropriate diplomacy option of which i forgot the name right now to guarantee support in the council voting.
You can also buy favours and don't rely on events, but they are not cheap.
- Councilors cannot join a faction.

PS: I think the UI implemention of the voting council and the laws could have been better and more intuitive,
especialy the missing link to the regular old council positions.
That's likely the main reason why it is perceived as complicated sometimes.

...

Yup , they patched it.
No masterrace genetics program possible anymore or not easily.

And not to diverge too much, but WTF is with the animals???
Only extremely rare. I never saw in regular game time.
I guess you can turn them off, if you use the game rule for absurd effects or the other simialr sounding rule.

Animal Kingdoms are a feature specificaly mentioned in the options for the random World scenario, but i up to know thought
they are not exclusive to it. Not sure anymore.

No the animals I saw in the Wiki, not the game. :D

Yes, the map expansion in 2014 for Rajas of India blew up a Solomonid game I wanted to finish, I tried to play without the update for a while and just drifted away. Been playing HoI4 the past 4 years but have been reading medieval history recently so am coming back. I will likely scoop up some DLC with the next sale (not sure if I want Conclave though).

They have definitely nerfed the stats from seven years ago. Just started an 867 game and my Welsh Petty King is a f'kin' LOSER. And so are all my worthless kids.

*Ambition while booting up the game* "I'm gonna shove a bone up Ivar's butt and take the British Isles from the Heathens!"

*Ambition after starting play* "Yes, I would like to get all my stats up to 8 please..."

Reminds me, Paradox showed quite challenging behaviour over the eight years of CK2 in many ways and constantly (often enough for me) changing UI and features didn't help my enjoyment and i'm sure i wasn't the only one.
Which is one of the main reasons why i hold back buying any newer game.
I'm not going to be their guinea pig (that easily) again.

They have definitely nerfed the stats from seven years ago. Just started an 867 game and my Welsh Petty King is a f'kin' LOSER. And so are all my worthless kids.

Thirteen years into a 586 year campaign, so far so good. My worthless heir (oldest son) stands to inherit not only my Petty Kingdom but possibly the neighboring one as well. And educating your own kids is still the way to go without the newer DLCs so his youngest brother may be his heir. So I will probably leave Way of Life, Conclave and Mystics off my shopping list and buy the rest of the major ones along with maybe some music and portrait packs.

One thing I never knew about the game until recently was that the game engine was a lash-up the Devs were never really happy with. Not sure if CKII was ever converted to 64 bit because of this, and it explains CKIII coming out as soon as it did. I am willing to bet EU4 and HoI4 are going to go longer than 8 years before there is a successor.

It is for me as well with the Conclave education system.

Not sure i follow your reasoning, but i don't have to.
I send you a Conversation /PM regarding some earlier expansions.

Weren't all paradox engines lash-ups ? ;)
Clausewitz engines are basically made on the go.
CK2 became 64bit with patch 3.2 or so.

Some old random CK2 memes i have on my drive and thought to give live to, as i felt like it after reading your post...

The Paradox store has 50% off on CKII DLCs right now, apparently.

Not sure if you're under the impression that WoL and M&M have something to do with inheritance and/or education, or if you had some other reason for not wanting them? Because I have both of them but not Conclave, and I'm still educating my own kids and inheritance still works the same way it did before I got them. They mainly give you things to do when you're not at war, ways to build your characters up. I guess with WoL you no longer have the "Improve stat X" ambition, but instead the focuses will give you events to improve the related stat, so it's not that different. It's one of my favorite DLCs, I have to say.
