How is changing crown laws different with and without Conclave?
There is no crown law as used to.
Only the two..(edit after posting :...) whatever...see thelinks in above post.
You have a seperate council with your councillors who have voting rights, instead of vassals.
There is an additonal voting position for an honory title, called "Advisor" or similar.
The councillors have different type of voting behaviours.

- Voting results can be savely controlled by them owing you favours and you then using the individual
appropriate diplomacy option of which i forgot the name right now to guarantee support in the council voting.
You can also buy favours and don't rely on events, but they are not cheap.
- Councilors cannot join a faction.
PS: I think the UI implemention of the voting council and the laws could have been better and more intuitive,
especialy the missing link to the regular old council positions.
That's likely the main reason why it is perceived as complicated sometimes.

I also believe the Devs have cut down on the family eugenics (I arranged marriages of Genius to Strong so would always have an heir with one of those traits) and the ability to raise perfect children (years ago you could talk or beat any bad traits out of them). Does the game throw you a lot of curves now?
Yup , they patched it.
No masterrace genetics program possible anymore or not easily.
And not to diverge too much, but WTF is with the animals???
Only extremely rare. I never saw in regular game time.
I guess you can turn them off, if you use the game rule for absurd effects or the other simialr sounding rule.
