So, anyone have guesses or interesting ideas for future DLC? I'm sure they already have some in the works.

If CK2 is anything to go by, I expect they'll have plenty of unit graphics and song packs, and maybe:

  • Something wacky and ahistorical, like a more advanced New World
  • Added support for a resurrected or resurgent Byzantium
  • Ability to play as various pagan religions in Europe (and not just the save converter; real events and whatnot)

If EU3 is anything to go by, I expect the following:

  • Extension of the timeline to 1399 or similar, including the Hundred Years War
  • Extension of the timeline to the early 1820s to encompass the Napoleonic Wars (as far as I can tell, the game ends in the 18th Century)
  • A more in-depth focus on East Asia

While the colonial system is good, I'd like some more flavour and flexibility in regards to it. Maybe the ability to institute a viceroyalty or trade company (name it too? :)) over colonies you own, then have them as playable entities.

Religions, American natives and The Balkans could do with some unique ideas. There is basically no limit to what they can add to a game like this. The question is rather what they are doing first. It will be much easier to see what's needed once the game is released.

CKII has a DLC list totaling nearly 70USD....presently.

I expect EUIV DLC list to be about the same, if not more.

But if I had a choice, I'd go for music and a more in depth focus on Asia, particularly China, since Chinese history predates Europe-a. Oh....I got it! How about China Universalis??? Reptilian (dragon) worship for da win!

How about they make something out of the America's so its fun to play there, even if the arrival of europeans stop the fun there should be enough to do till that point in the game. Now it's just three indians, three mesoamericans and the inca's, becose they don't matter.

  • Conquistadors and Explorers. Dynamic chain events much like we have in CKII. These could really convey a sense of pushing into the jungle interior/ life aboard ship and encountering strange cultures and creatures. Kind of like a "Deathtrap Dungeon" adventure game book approach.

Just look at the adventures of Magellan, Cortez and Pizzarro. Absolutely bonkers! Mutanies, plague, bad portents, getting lost, skirmishes with natives, dynamic ally with small tribes events.... You could even have conquistadors gaining "attached" native armies from allied tribes aiding them in conquering local superpowers....

You could go furter and even "build" the composition of conquistador expeditions and explorer fleets. Have slots for lieutenants... do I take a learned Franciscan linguist, a Quatermaster, an engineer, a cartographer, a skilled hunter? Do I take a better ships cook for morale, a family of cats to hunt rats and reduce instances of plague aboard ship, a priest to reduce instances of mutiny a skilled carpenter to reduce hull damage over time or a rigger to increase speed.....

You could have different setups for Western/ Orthodox (pushing into Siberia etc) / Muslim (into the East).

I may post this in a thread of it's own....

I expect Paradox to break the mould regarding DLC for EU4. If you thought it was bad for CK2 just wait. I see at least 50+ DLC sets on the horizon. This is why I will not buy the game on release, apart from its high price. I will buy it in a years time possibly when the DLC is bundled with the gmae for £15 like I did with CK2, and only if the game is any good.

If Paradox really appreciated their fans they would release the game for £30 then some free DLC packs, or alternatively release the game at £15 and get plenty of people with the money to buy the DLC to follow. But releasing an expensive game and then hundreds of expensive DLC packs? Not a chance mate. I am not buying.

Anyway I have said this enough starting to sound like a broken record. So I am off. I might revisit EU4 in a few months to see how cheap it is then.

Yeah, or if they really, REALLY appreciated their fans, they should release the game for free, and keep working on free DLC till the company goes bankrupt.

In all seriousness though, it's the same old case of nobody forcing you to buy all this DLC.

I think the whole industry went to the DLC road and we will never turn back on it. Paradox should be no different... I really don't mind the DLCs, considering they are cosmetic andyou can get constant version updates for free. It is better than most companies are doing now. Having said that, I do understand people's point of view when it comes to the use of the idea of "nobody is forcing you", because the trick with the DLC is that unconsciously some people feel that their games are incomplete and they rather wait for get a "full" versions with all DLCs included.

You know what I would want to see? A "Monarch Portraits" DLC. I would love to see the avatars of your monarchs implemented in EUIV, like in CKII (I know there is no need, but Sunset Invasion wasn't either). Considering that this is the period when you start to have more realistic portraits of the monarchs, I would like to see PDS visual artists 3D versions of famous monarch paintings :)

As long as the content in the DLC isn´t overpriced (5 euros for some overhaul of the certain part of the game is ok, 5 euros for one song is not), I have no problem with them. Well, maybe if there would be a DLC every week, I´d be angry.

An idea that came to me:

EU2 in one of its incarnations had a great scenario where you could play as Vinland, which in this case was a successful Viking settlement in North America that had essentially forgotten all about Europe. It also added in at least one native nation near by, Acadie, so that it wasn't too boring or lonely. I'd love to see something like that return.

My other favorite scenario from EU2 was Fantasia, where almost the entire map was uncolonized territory except for a handful of very powerful OPMs representing various far-flung nations, with lots of bonuses to colonization. I've seen attempts to recreate it in EU3 but none of them had the same feel. I thought it was loads of fun; it certainly made for a very different game.
