I recently came back to CKII, and noticed that as has happened before my dlc would not load up. I checked and unchecked, validated game cache, reinstalled, and deleted all saved content on my computer- totally scoured it clean. Yet when I reinstall the game, check all the DLCs are ticked and boot it up I still cannot access any DLC content, half the character's family crest are black, there is no 867 start date, and I cannot play as republics or pagans- I am at my wit's end and have no idea what to do.

Looking at the forums- all solutions seem to be based around validating- and very few have the same problem as me where the dlc appears in the launcher but not once the game has started up. Anything you could do to help me solve this would be fantastic.

Black crests seems to imply that your deletion didn't go well, somehow. Try manually deleting or renaming the entire Documents CK2 directory and let the game recreate it at default settings (obviously move any valued save games elsewhere first).

Are you on Steam or GG?

I am on Steam. The ingame store is also greyed out at the game menu- if that is any help. I have deleted the entire contents of Crusader Kings within the my documents folder under my games- deleted every folder in My Computer with the word "Crusader" in it(I am on windows vista), but still it doesn't seem to work- however the shields do now show up properly.

The In-game store is for GG customers only, so you can ignore it.

Is Steam installed in your system path, ie under c:\program files\ ? If so right-click on ck2.exe and ck2game.exe and set them to run as the Admin user.

Steam is installed, allong with CK2 on my external harddrive, under program files there yes.
I'm sorry, but that doesn't make sense. c:\program files\ is always on your boot drive which is never going to be an external disk. What is the EXACT path to where Steam is please?

The DLC files are all listed in the Steam CK2 /dlc/ folder? You said in post #3 that you have "deleted the entire contents of Crusader Kings within the my documents folder under my games- deleted every folder in My Computer with the word "Crusader" in it" - but that has no effect on where the DLCs are. We should probably try a full clean reinstall: move any valued save games elsewhere and uninstall the game from within Steam. Then manually delete ALL the CK2 directories from under BOTH the Steam and MyDocuments folders. Now reinstall the game from Steam, and run the Verify just to make sure it all came down properly.

I got the same problem as the OP, but with a GamersGate version of the game.
My game crashes when I have the African and/or Norse Portrait DLCs installed and click on Singleplayer. Other portrait DLCs work fine.
Also I am not able to play any republics or any heathen characters, even though I got both DLCs installed. Also the 867 start date is missing.
I installed the game several times, deleted the CK2 installation folders in between and deleted the CK2 folder in Documents before the last installation run.

Please do this, as it usually solves probs with DLC on GamerGate:

- Check in the in-game store, log in to gamersgate, check if the DLCs are marked as installed there (maybe a reinstall is necessary), stay logged in (!), leave the gamestore, quit the game , start the game up again.

Besides, your game should be patched to 1.111 beforehand or at least 1.10.

- Regarding the start date of 867, it's only a bookmark IIRC, so did you scroll the bookmarks ? It might be not one of the first bookmarks.

IF the problem persists, please start your own thread.
Usually problems with DLCs from Steam or Gamersgate have different solutions and reasons, so its not practical if these problems get discussed in the same thread.

Exactly. I assumed that the GG install was up to date. My bad. It is patched and everything works. Thanks for the help.

Good, you're welcome. :)
..and no it's not. This way you can also patch the base version (1.06 or such) to any patch onwards. That's handy if you want to play an older currently incompatible mod for instance. The patches are in the stickied thread here in the Tech Support forum.

K:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings II I have a program files folder on my external hard drive simply because it makes cataloging easier.
I have done 3 full clean reinstalls, and my deleting of every folder with the word crusader in in before one reinstall of course deleted the dlc subfolder. I have verified, both exe's are running s administrator.

OK, that's fine - it was you naming it "program files" that tripped me up, that's the same name as the system folder. Have you made a userdir.txt to move the user files there or somewhere too, or are they still going to Documents CK2 on the c: drive?

In Steam right-click on CK2 and go to properties-local files-browse local files. Does that take to to that same place K:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings II ? ck2.exe and ck2game.exe are in there? Is there a DLC directory under that, with files like dlc001.zip dlc001.dlc and so on? Steam.exe is in K:\Program Files\Steam ?

If all of the above is fine I'm really not sure what your problem could be. As a test can you could copy that whole K:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings II folder to, say, c:\games\ck2 and manually run ck2.exe from there, what happens then?
