Hey all I'm about to start playing EU4 heavily again after a hiatus and wanted to add a couple of expansion packs but there seems to be a ton out and at $10-15 each, paying $60-80 seems a bit ridiculous. I play only single player and currently have WON, and know that I definitely don't want the random new world generator. Other than that what are opinions on the most "needed" or useful dlc's with the most interesting game features if I had to pick a few?

The general consensus usually is that Art of War is the most rich for what it adds. So get that one. The others well, I'd recommend that you read over what their features are a bit and decide based on which nation you want to play, whether if it's worth it or not for you. Most (or all?) expansions add something that can be used by everyone, but they also add features that only apply for certain nations. Are you going to play a Theocracy? Get Common Sense. Are you aiming to play a Native American civilization? Get El Dorado. And so forth.

Also, wait till next week before buying, there's a sale coming.

Well. For one, all of the main expansion DLC. But other than that. Since you are asking I am assuming you don't have them I guess. The Phoenix Rises is a decent DLC if you like Byzantium. Forget the American dream DLC, it is mostly broken.

Common Sense & Art of War seems to be most popular at the community..

El Dorado has a devout following among the people who want to play custom nations (very popular mode), but thats not everyones style.

I personally am partial to Res Publica, just for national focus...

It certainly worked easier with CK2 (starting off with a lot of the map unplayable made it easier to divide DLC and free content). But I still appreciate being able to get bug-fixes immediately while I wait to decide whether to get a DLC (and for it to go on sale).

I am looking forward to Stellaris in that respect (and the inevitable playable robots/AI DLC).

Besides, the free content that this system delivers is fairly nice, and the more frequent updates aswell.

Thanks for the responses. The DLC system is a bit confusing to figure out when you've been gone awhile its one thing to have to pull up the features list on each one and another to piece together what impact certain changes will even have on the game. My main thing is to not be missing what feels like "core" features. Playing the base game and realizing that there is definitely something visibly missing from the experience behind a DLC. So from one play through it seems like Common Sense and Art of War are the minimum of what I need to make the game feel complete with development, national focus, and better subject interactions and handling of war goals.

Not sure about Cossacks yet, estates seems interesting.

I was really looking forward to Cossacks because of the estates but I don't really know if I like them. The whole feature seems underdeveloped and the estates are mostly tedious, even if that extra mp is nice.

I like estates, but the system could certainly be expanded on.

Art of war is pretty much a must I think.
Common sense does not bring in that many interesting features IMO, although the accompanying patch did add some important changes.
I liked more Cossacks comparatively.

Of all the special gameplay features for governments/religion I liked the most El Dorado; playing Mesoamerican before/after it is night and day, but the other features are a bit underwhelming I think so only good if you want to play Mesoamerican or Andean nations.

I already started turning Cossacks off when I play nations that need very aggressive style from day 1 like Aztecs, Najd etc. The diplomacy features just mean your allies won't join aggressive wars early which leads to higher costs in manpower, especially in sieges, which leads to more mercenaries you need to use and this brings a certain chance to go bankrupt. I never faced this problem in over 1000 hours without Cossacks.

Reviews of cossacks like the one you just typed made sure I never spent a dime on that DLC.

Seems like the features included just make the game harder and less interesting (more stuff to do, but boring stuff).
I mean, having to give land to estates? It's aaaaall mineeee :D
Favors? Wouldn't mind that, but the system seems to work better and simpler without them.

In other games or other situations, Cossacks can provide great benefits. For example, giving land to a religious estate may increase your missionary force there and make it easier to convert, so it should make it way easier to convert religious centres. And the diplomatic features should prevent a long-time ally to turn to rival out of the sudden, because all other possible rivals are gone. This could even be a game breaker (for example, it killed my best Najd game when Ottos turned against me).
