Totally support your suggestion, smaller 3D models, in little groups, would suit WWII better, rather than a single large Chess style piece, which seems to loom over multiple provinces distracting from the map in my view.
More folks have higher resolution monitors these days, (If you havn't tried a high resolution monitor for gaming..... in my view you should save your pennies for an upgrade they are great) so smaller 3d model and good detail shouldn't be a problem.
Be interested to know if Dev's have tried smaller models and had issues?
