Queen Kyra Percy of Anatolia – Part III
The realm had grown, and Kyra was starting to feel her age. She wanted to become a Basilissa, and thought about the possible ways to do it. Her first idea was to swear fealty to the Magna Francian Emperor Savary and use the shadows to seize the throne for herself. But Magna Francia was, unlike Anatolia, not inhabited by Greeks and there was no kin who would vote for her in the elections – there was no election as well. All would depend on her becoming regent, but that would pose a problem – no Emperor of right mind appoints his abductress as regent. Therefore, Kyra studied the life of Drogomir Mazowiecki, seeing if his methods would bring her more luck – but the world had learned from its former mistakes. So she set her mind on becoming great enough in the eyes of the world so that she could crown herself Empress of Anatolia.
She became renowned for her just rule, and the count of Thessalia swore fealty to her after she conquered Thessalonike and murdered his father. She allowed her son Dorotheos to enter the service of the Hospitallers and conquered Lori from the Mazdakis. As she marched on Tripoli, the Crusade finally ended in favour of the Teutons.
The war against the Abbasids was once again hard fought, but ended in victory without the need to call her allies. To raise her prestige, Kyra created duchies before handing them out to her vassals, more and more of them being Percys. She usurped Armenia, making her a triple-queen, and invaded the boy-shah of Tabarestan as well as the last Zoroastrian duke in Armenia.
As Kyra worked on her glory and Anatolia's future as Empire, her son Konstas worked hard to ensure the stability of the realm. He and the duke of Tripoli provided delicate informations on many of Kyra's vassals, preventing any chance of revolt, while he also assured that most of Anatolia was in the hand of the Percys through murder and deceit. As Kyra tried to 'open the way' for Dorotheos to become Grandmaster of the Hospitallers, one of her victim's sons tried to kill her – Konstas noticed the plot and silenced him.
Truces with her Zoroastrian neighbours forced Kyra to turn southwards. As Queen of Syria, she could claim Druz, Az Zarqa from New Coptia and Amman from Egypt. The 'desert Poles' had a problematic army coordination which allowed Kyra to take the counties without the intensity of resistance she expected. Egypt had split its army and was overwhelmed in Reeshah and Xois, New Coptia didn't have the numbers to resist.
As the cacophony of the nobles' complaints became too much to bear for her, she decided to attack her daughter-in-law. The duchess of Cyprus had converted to Waldensianism. Worse for Kyra, her son Neophytos had turned his back on Catholicism and was a Copt now. During the war, the Spider Queen's efforts for cultural unity within the realm paid off, as the majority of Ancyra and Herakleia were Greek now. Konstas had success to report as well, as he had eliminated the duchess of Cibyrrhaeot.
Shortly after her husband Sisay had died and Kyra married the king of Bavaria, only to raise her prestige even more, the Abbasids had another civil war she took advantage of. As the Moabadan-Moabad was getting weaker each day and threatened Kyra with the revenge of Ahura Mazda carried out by his successor, she called Emperor Savary into her invasion of Aintab and Jazira. Battle over battle was fought, and in the middle of the war, she felt confident enough to proclaim that her dream had come true. She had beaten an Empire so many times as a queen, now she would do it as an equal. Basilissa Kyra Percy of the Anatolian Empire!
With her goal reached, she developed the ambition to hold on to it and calmed down. Not even the Zoroastrian Great Holy War called upon her to reclaim Syria or Humayun and his adventurer host could stop her. With the Magna Francian army still in the Middle East, all wars ended in Kyra's favour.
It would be her last wars. The message of Shahanshah Nard's death in battle filled her once more with joy, as it meant that her sworn enemies, the Abbasids, would lose the Empire in the next generation. Unlike the Percys, who ruled most of Anatolia themselves. They would hold on to her Empire. Even if her sons died before her or were holy knights. She died peacefully, aged 60, in Ancyra the 7th March 1285, leaving her smart grandson in charge of her true come dream.
He has the potential to hold on to the Empire. Go Percys!
As Kyra died, it is said that
her shadow left the room... ready to haunt some poor soul, carrying its vicious schemes, belligerent nature and dreams of eternal glory with it...
What is left to say? Another Empire has entered the stage. We now have Magna Francia, Hispania, New Coptia, Anatolia, Persia, Rajasthan and the Mongols. The Hordes have been completely passive, sitting on around 100k men each and staring into the steppes. I think they want to invade China or Muslims, but the first won't be possible and the second are only present in Mali. Hungary and Abyssinia are still strong, and the Crusade took more then thirty years to end successful. In a world of blobs, what will happen next? Will the Mongols wake up or continue their role as sleeping giants? Or will a new global player arise?
My turn ends here, but I can make a short global update if people are interested, pick some interesting characters and detail what happened to them during the turn. Kyra ruled for a bit more then 50 years, something has to have changed elsewhere as well, and I can probably guess best what happened.
