Communion - Tier 1
As our civilization teeters on the precipice of a religious renaissance, several among the ranks of our priests claim to have heard the words of a higher being. Perhaps there is truth to their words...
  • Requires Holographic Rituals technology
For several years, our top theologists have poured over multitudes of religious scripture and text, attempting to discover the secret of communion with our object of worship. Legends have been passed down through the ages, telling of a booming voice, calming yet assertive, echoing through the heads of select, lucky [species]s. These individuals would go on to found our religion, become prominent figures in scripture, and define the course of our civilization for centuries to come.

Now, after the advent of space travel and our assertion of our place in the universe, select priests and leaders among our people claim to have heard the word of a higher power. Such claims are not new; the vast majority are isolated, and quickly outed as hoaxes. However, the large influx of these claims from many venerable and respected people among our government and clergy has lead to real speculation and intrigue in the idea that our lord may be reaching out to us once again.

A special project has been set up to launch a proper investigation; if this is true, this is a chance no sapient being would want to miss out on.
It is true.

The claims, from several different groups of [species] who have had no contact with each other for years before this event, seem to align into a single, coherent narrative: That we, the [species] have an untapped potential as the chosen people of our faith. That we, as a people, may yet elevate ourselves higher in the eyes of our lord, and bring about a religious awakening unlike that the universe has ever seen.

Not only that, but several of the visions have been precognitive, predicting events that were yet to come as if to prove their legitimacy to us.

This revelation has taken our country by storm, and worship attendance has never been higher in the history of our civilization. Truly we are blessed to have this opportunity to improve ourselves in the eyes of a higher being.

True Divinity - Tier 2
We are the chosen people of a creator who transcends reality. Their word is our word, our will is their will. All will see the truth in time.
  • Requires Holy Communion technology, which unlocked Chamber of Communion
After a time of relishing in the presence of our lord, [ruler] [name] of the [country name] has received another vision while in [his/her] private chambers. According to one of their assistants, after the vision was concluded, [she/he] immediately tore out of the room, desperate to address the people.

In a speech broadcast across the entirety of the [country name], the [ruler] spoke of their vision. They spoke of dead [species] rising in a chorus, accepted into the arms of our lord. They spoke of great [species adj] heroes on foreign worlds, spreading our holy word. They spoke of eternal bliss after our time in this world, and a place at the side of our lord. They spoke on and on, until they were about to faint. And even then, they continued to speak.

While many of these claims do not seem to have any basis in reality, we don't need one. If our lord speaks to us of such a glorious future, who are we to deny it?

Already our people rise up in a chorus, setting to work to build worlds worthy of divine presence. Unnoteworthy workers pick up swords and pledge themselves to a greater cause. The stars glimmer with hope, and of a path forward toward holy ascension.

For the first time since we left [homeworld], we feel truly divine.
  • Unlocks planet-unique Divine Monastery building, allowing the recruitment of powerful Crusader armies
  • 'Divine Presence' becomes 'Divine Fervor', scaling up to +20% Research Speed, +20% Fire Rate, and +30% Resources from Jobs at 100%
  • Unlocks the Holy Crusade CB, only usable against non-spiritual empires. Planets taken with this CB have +200% Spiritualist Attraction for 30 years
  • Leaders have a higher chance to generate with the Divine Guidance trait, and the ruler/heir will always gain it if they do not have it upon appointment
  • Materialist empires will receive a -100 opinion modifier for "Idiotic Zealotry"

Collective Unconscious - Tier 1
Through unification of state and purpose did we reach for the stars, and through unification of mind and soul will we reach ever further.
  • Requires The Collective Self technology
Ever since our foray into the sciences expanded beyond the bounds of our homeworld, growing complexity of both bureaucracy and culture has puzzled our leaders endlessly. Many have given up the idea of achieving a true unified empire, while others have given in to the chaos that has encompassed our civilization. So too do the people of the [empire] clamor for a solution, from a break of the endless grinding gears that constitute the state and daily life.

Some scientists offer a different solution: collectivization through technology. By borrowing some evolutionary tricks from what we've learned about gestalt consciousnesses, we may be able to elevate our species by connecting individuals to a 'pseudo-gestalt mind' via biological and cybernetic means, so that they retain individuality while also having access to a communal pool of knowledge from anywhere in space that will grow in knowledge and power over time.

Though the concept is still in its infancy and requires more research, swathes of our population have pushed for its development to be a priority; apparently the allure of giving oneself to a collective consciousness is more popular an idea than we originally thought.
The modification of our species is complete, and the [species] now belong to what can only be described as a 'collective unconscious.' Though we retain individuality, a cacophony of voices echoes in the back of our heads, ignorable but ever present. Should we choose, we can focus on information being shared in the collective mind to apply it, as well as lean into the collective temporarily or permanently, allowing it to operate our bodies remotely, so that our minds may fully able to focus on other things.

Already the benefits of the arrangement have become staggering; the sciences have begun to flourish, workplace satisfaction and general happiness is at an all time high, and the chaotic churning of bureaucratic gears within our empire has softened to the gentle hum of an efficient engine.

  • Pops gain the 'Collective Unconscious' trait, increasing happiness by +20%, decreasing empire sprawl by -15%, and increasing pop growth speed by +10%
  • Leaders gain 'Collective Unconscious' perk, decreasing hire age by 10 years (effectively increasing lifespan by 10 years)
  • Other species default to remaining normal, but can be sublimated into the collective unconscious with a citizenship right
  • Unlocks Synaptic Nodes building and applicable technologies
  • Unlocks Sentinel Posts building

Union of Souls - Tier 2
In our effort to achieve perfection, we must cast off the selfish individuality that bind us. A unity of minds, of bodies, of purpose, of souls, of dreams will drive us forward. We go together, as one.
  • Requires Confluence of Thought technology
Though we have relished in the benefits of being a unified species, over time a growing ache has been festering in the core of our collective; a need that has gone unfilled as our minds continue to meld together:

We wish to be one.

Not metaphorically, but literally. All that we wish is for our minds to embrace each other in an eternal union, not separated by any remaining boundaries. Every form shall belong to one mind, every mind brought together unto one form.

The remaining individual elements of our collective have already shared their approval of the idea. They too have felt the ache, the need, the desire. The [species] shall transcend space, and we shall be together evermore.
At long last. The cacophony of individuality has dissolved into a true gestalt consciousness, and we, as [species]s, have awoken to a new dawn with one mind.

Though we are still able to harbor species with individuality, we have put in place new infrastructure better befitting a collective consciousness. We do not exist as a wild being as many evolved collectives do, but as a civilized entity fully able to interact and work alongside other sapients.

We look toward the stars with one set of eyes, and the possibilities of the universe are laid out before us.
  • Main species becomes Hive Minded with all the effects that come with it, including an immortal leader, inability to join factions, unaffected by happiness, +25% pop growth speed, -25% empire sprawl penalty, and Gestalt Consciousness founding ethic
  • Empire authority becomes a unique Hive Mind that can use both normal and hive mind civics, as well as tolerate pops of other species on their planets and use normal empire buildings
  • Individual pops from other species can still be granted the 'Collective Unconscious' trait but cannot be fully sublimated into the hive mind
  • Unlocks Spawning Pools building

Some interesting ideas, but what's the gameplay role of these intended to be? How do they interact and trade-off with existing ascensions.

Communion seems to be focused on 'making spiritualist good', but there's already a spiritualist-themed ascension path- psionics, which already has similar buffs to what you're suggesting. You may be suggesting bigger numbers in some ways, but from spiritualist attraction to anti-crime measures to leader-unique perk impacts and so on, this seems in direct competition.

Hive-mind ascension seems more interesting in abstract, but as written it would be a total trash-tier ascension path, as it gimps or gives up many of the strengths that non-hive-minds would be acruing by this point of the game (trade, robots, bio-ascension, ethics-attraction influence) in favor of mechancis that would already be becoming outdated for hiveminds. Hive-minds are fundamentally early-bloom economy builds, but taper off in the mid-game. Bio-ascension's mechanics are flat better for a number of your points- clone vats (bio ascension 1) are far superior to spawning pools (hive-ascension 2), the ability to rewrite species traits (including adding on nerve-stapling) is better than not having to assimilate drones (which hives get at Bio-ascension 2). It's interesting- especially the idea of mixing hive-and-normal civics- but there's no great hive-civics for the later game anyway, especially if you're not converting conquests into drones. If you're just picking the better organics traits, you might as well go bio-ascension, where super-traits like Fecund are 30% growth vis-a-vis net 20% and you could get Cloning Vats at the first perk for a 30% pop assembly rate over robot factories.

Psionics always seemed like they shouldn't have 'belonged' to spiritualists in the first place, especially now that Nemesis is out; Since anyone with enough ambition and lack of regard for other species can build a big machine to suck energy out of the Shroud, it doesn't seem like something that would be out of reach for even the most material materialists; it's just another plane of existence.

With the addition of Divine Ascension, I would also look to unhook the idea of Psionics from Spiritualist, and make it more of a neutral ground like Biological. Sure you can still roll chosen one and have your empire worship a psionic deity, but the Spiritualist FE would be Divine instead of Psionic, etc.

In a way, having Divine be directly 'better, but a bit different' than Psionic in this case will indirectly buff Spiritualist play like you said, and also make Psionic make more sense RP wise.

Mostly, Collective Ascension is just to fulfill a gameplay fantasy that I've been itching for for a while; the idea of an individualist species 'ascending' to become a collective. However, I did have some ideas to make it viable.

In my opinion, there are perks to this that would allow it to be competitive:
  • There are certainly hive-mind civics that would be useful to a regular empire. 'Natural Neural Network' will allow you to pile on research much faster from your new Hive Mind +25% Growth Speed buff, and Subspace Ephapse and Empath are just buffed versions of their individualist empire versions.
  • With a Gestalt Consciousness founding ethic, you get a free +1 Influence, as well as free pops continuing to generate factions. This is good for a few reasons, namely big Megastructure game in later years, easier claims without having to rely on TW, etc.
  • The potential +20% happiness for free pops is pretty big, basically a flat resource boost the more of your pops that have it.
  • Lost Colony, Syncretic Evolution, Clone Army, Common Ground, Hegemon, Shoulders of Giants, Scion, and Void Dwellers should be compatible with the ascension path, finally allowing synergy with gestalt play.
  • This also doesn't restrict you from regular gene-modding, although I agree forgoing the ascension traits is a pretty big trade off.
