How exactly does it work? I am the Knights, and have conquered all the Greek group culture provinces and moved my capital to Athens. All my provinces until Kaffa (which is already "overseas") do not have this modifier, but everything east of Kaffa has that nasty -90% tax modifier. How to get rid of it? I tried moving my capital to Edirne, which is closer to my Asian half, but nothing has changed.

Also, I have cores on all provinces.

distant overseas modifier applies when your provinces are on a different continent and there is no land connection between your capital and those provinces.
There is a tax modifier and also a manpower modifier. Also regiments and ships take longer to build.
Are all your provinces connected?

As Ottomans with capital in Konstantinopel/Istanbul I had no distant overseas modifier in Europe and in Asia I had none as long as the provinces were connected with the capital- Those further away ie. unconnected had the distant overseas modifier.

Distant oversea does apply to provinces that are on another continent (and have no direct land connection?). European provinces are always considered connected, no matter what.

Have a look at the region map. You suffer distant overseas penalty for a province which is both on another continent and does not have a land connection. IE if you capital is at constantinople and you have a land connection with south africa through the levant, Egypt and East Africa you won't suffer any penalty. Yet if your capital is at constantinople you will suffer it for a non connected province on the wrong side of the Black sea.

I see. My capital is in Athens, and the provinces I have in Asia are not connected to the capital, they are just connected to the European province of Kaffa. :(

Maybe I should move my capital to Kaffa, but that would be not too historical and I would lose an expensive building :(

Also, if the region is near your capital even if not connected and on another continent, you won't get the distant overseas penalty. For example some morocco provinces don't have the penalty for spain. Unfortunately, I don't know how it is calculated, would be nice if it was based on naval tech or trade tech like colonization or sphere of influence distance limits respectively.

Why not make it your goal to acquire the west and north shores of the Black Sea and make the land connection?

Well while we're necroing this thread...

I'm planning to move Sicily to Kyoto or Nanjing in a multiplayer game. My intention is to conquer China, Japan and as much of the South East Asian islands as I can, before the other nations start stomping me for my land. If we consider the situation where I move my capital to Kyoto and start taking Chinese land, will I still receive the maximum tax? Or, because the two provinces are not directly connected, will I lose out on all that juicy tax? I'm asking this question in order to make my decision on where to put my capital, and therefore where to conquer first.

Cheers for anyone that can help me out.

either way, you will get full tax from every province you control in asia-if you put it in nanjing, you will also get full tax from any european/african provinces you own that can trace a land connection to nanjing.
