Are there reasons that a division can disappear without being surrounded? I keep having armor divisions vanish while sitting on the front line. The enemy isn't advancing so I am not sure what is happening.

The only instance I can think where a division might really disappear is when a civil war starts (each side gets a number of divisions and some divisions might teleport to the other side )

If they lose enough strength before being able to retreat. I've had this happen with high-Org brigade-sized divisions before when I was trying a few things.

That may be the issue. the divisions were assigned to attack a heavily fortified area, They must have been beating their heads against a wall and losing all of their tanks.

Yes.

I've had situations where the overrun mechanic either isn't working or the AI somehow cheats and orders units around as they're retreating.

As an example, a 1 vs 1 scenario, assume you have a single armor division attacking a province (we'll call it province "A") that has a slow enemy infantry division. You win. The enemy starts retreating to province "B", which is completely bordered by territory their country controls. You immediately take province "A" and proceed to province "B", which you make it to because your armor division is much faster than the infantry division. Now here's where the garbage begins. You should overrun the enemy, but it doesn't happen. The enemy infantry division actually captures province "A" (the place where they were retreating from) and starts attacking you in province "B". Now, since they were retreating and had low org, they regain org a heck of a lot faster than your division. And since your division just took an enemy province, they're low on org. So in the combat, your armor division is low on org, is now surrounded since the enemy somehow retook province "A", and gets completely annihilated.

I would say the overrun mechanic doesn't work 25% of the time due to this. Because of this, I always keep one division in province "A" to avoid this garbage happening.

Seen this happen several times with the British using the pre-war "Armored Brigade" template (Light Tanks, no motorized support). Throw them out in the desert (high attrition), with low replacement rates (Low production as things tend to spiral out of control before you are ready), and they tend to melt and disappear without seeing much combat (if any). Best not to do much with them before you can throw some motorized/support brigades in with them...
