There will surely be a mod for BC/AD anyways...
... If the game is moddable in that respect...
Except it can, and it does already in EUR. Just as a tooltip, rather than as a permanent part of the UI.it's not. the engine for whatever reason can't do countdowns on the clock.
I hate when dates tick DOWN as you play. Its just silly.
thats why the game will use AUC
And then people demand every other calendar even vaguely in use as well. The "silly" design choice that literally every game set in the period except EU: Rome uses.
I somewhat understand the argument for making AUC the default. I do not understand, however, why there shouldn't be an option to make BCE the primary date that you see at the top of the screen without having to hover over it. It's such a minor detail; people are not going to have their experiences ruined by switching to BCE such that you need to protect them from having the option.
Options -> Interface -> Year
Option 1: AUC (BCE/BC in tooltip)
Option 2: BCE (AUC in tooltip)
Option 3: BC (AUC in tooltip)
Done.
And then people demand every other calendar even vaguely in use as well.
Your "simple" interface option gets quite long at that point.
I didn't know the Islamic calendar was in use 1000 years before Mohammed. Do tell me more about this...Woah. There's slippery slope arguments, and then there's this beauty.
It seems highly unlikely that people will demand the Mayan and Islamic calendars because the game DARED to include BCE (the default calendar used by all other games set in this period).

Not to mention BC and BCE are the same, so making them different options is strange... Even more so in languages where there isn't a distinction in the abbreviation between the two.
(Also, on a side note: If you want to go full immersion mode, you would have to display the name of the two (!) consuls currently in power and not the AUC number, because that's what Romans actually used for their calender)
Not the 59 bc haha, that was the year of Ceaser and Ceasar.![]()

Look, unless you're deliberately trying to distort the point it should be clear that I'm talking about calendars in use in the area covered by the map, during the timeframe of the game.
Mayan doesn't apply because it's way, way off map. Islamic is out because it won't be invented for 1000 years after game start (or around 650 after the game ends).
I'm talking about the assorted Greek, Persian, Egyptian, Hebrew, and Indian calendars, as well as any others that might be on map.
It rapidly becomes quite long, and isn't as simple as two or three entries.
Unless of course the only calendars you can think of except AUC and BCE are those ones?
Even with just the other relevant calendars for the mediterranian that have been mentioned up thread, we'd be adding at least four more....uh, BCE/CE is the calendar system the vast majority of the modern world (players of the game) use. THAT is why people are asking for it. It has nothing to do with it being used historically.
No one (except you, apparently) is going to be confused by a menu option for BCE and then come complain about more obscure historical calendars not being excluded (again, except you, apparently). So yeah, your slippery slope about people crawling out of the woodwork to demand obscure, extinct calendar systems be included in the game is utterly absurd.

Greek (Olympiad) calendar: 776 BC
Macedon calendar: 317 BC
Seleucid calendar: 312 BC
Pontic calendar: 337 BC
To add to the existing
Roman calendar: 753 BC
Dionysian (BCE/CE) 1 CE
They're hardly obscure. You're up to 6, 5 of which are relevant to the era. There are probably others that have been suggested for inclusion, since India is large and relevant, and had native dating systems of its own.
At least the Olympiad has been specifically asked for in other threads. Other threads have also requested that all "important" local calendars are included, on an immersion basis.
Someone even suggested (hopefully in jest, although its difficult to tell) the Holocene calendar.
Please explain. I still don't see how using BC(/AD) or making the date format optional would make the game any better. The game could just count down and end when it reaches 0 for all I care. Apart from knowing how long it is until the game ends, why do you need to know which year it is? Adding the date format as an option takes time (although probably not a lot), copy/pasting the tooltip code from EU:Rome is probably a lot quicker, and just as useful.Again, you're completely missing (deliberately ignoring?) the actual reason BCE would be added.
