I want to travel alone in the world and defeat everything by myself. But unfortunately I have already taken a companion with me so now I am struggling with how to get rid of her. I try going through some dialog options but it does not seem to have any option to get rid of her. So can you even get rid of a companion or do I have to restart the game?

If you have three companions, trying to pick up a fourth will bring up a party management interface that for some reason doesn't otherwise exist. In that you can simply throw them all out. Can't be done until act two (actually, there is one way to get a fourth companion in act one, but close enough ;p).
