In the last VOC-Portugal war Dutch losses were 133.000 man and 75 warships, of which 48 to attrition while blockading and Portuguese fleets. Portuguese losses were 83.000 man and 77 warships, almost all (71) in combat.
Expressed in local prices, Dutch army losses were worth about 2.500 d and Portuguese more than 1.700 d (no data on mercenaries). Dutch navy losses were worth about 2.600 d while Portuguese were about 3.550 d. In total, VOC paid about 5.100 d and Portugal paid more than 5.200 d.
As, said, huge numbers even if one was victorious. So, VOC is ready to talk about
buying some Portuguese land instead of acquireing them by use of other methods.
