I agree that Alaska should not be cut out of the map.

I hope the entire world is enabled too, like alaska and such. I can say for a fact the amount of provinces that will be in the game if that screenie is any indication will make me drool in happiness. I guess there won't be any 'one-province' minors this time around, not even luxembourg. :D

This is beautiful.. looks like there is a much more sophisticated code that draws the edges of the provinces and national borders.

i'm guessing that the red lines are the national borders..

seems they should be a bit bolder.. so that one gets a better feel for it when looking at it.. as it stands, they don't seem to be pronounced enough.

other than that.. i'm thinking this looks pretty awesome..

curious about the cartoony appearance..

part of the appeal of the EU series is that it gives off an appearance of being a serious historical simulation.. and lives up to the appearance. with the rather cartoony look i see on the lefthand side, i fear that VIC will not give the same appearance as the previous releases.

perhaps this is what they are shooting for?

after all, paradox games have gotten many reviews that complain about a learning curve and that it looks intimidating. i think one even said, "What if they threw a war and nobody understood it."

Well no offence meant, but I, for one, think this map looks ugly. I don't mean to be rude, but hear me out:

1: While the oceans have a very "wargamish" look by being so plain and simple, the land provs look are plain unpleasant to look at. Those bizarre green spots/forests makes it look like a screenie from the 1993 remake of "Seven Cities of Gold."

2: The map seems REALLY empty. We can't really see anything of each prov... Of course, should this screenie be from the "military" map and not the general map, just ignore point #2.

3: Those soldiers... The Swedish colors stand out, but the red coats of the Danes makes them quite difficult to spot...

4: Those black & red lines...

5: And is that icon for on the top left side the White House? If so, I do know the US market is an important one, but I think Buckingham would be more appropriate.

Now I know some people will think I'm trolling or being over-critical, but I'm just worried that the PE maps get uglier by the game. The EU2 map was an improvement over the EU map, but HoI looks really ugly, and yet HoI looks really cool compared to this one.

Now I realise that the look of the game shouldn't be what we focus on, but a nice map shouldn't be considered optional, esp. since we'll be using it for hours and hours of gaming.

Otherwise, the timespan covered by Victoria is really interesting, and Victoria looks like a nice game. :)

Cheers,

Eochaid

The little stepping stones that represented places where troops could cross the water without using a fleet are missing. I wonder if we will need ship to move troops across all bodies of water.

i think overall it needs some work on the terrain, the black over red/red over black mixy like lines need changed (unless it adds to the game that way) but im sure all will be fixed in time because paradox is the crew that does the dew! (yes....that last sentence was lame... i realized that)

Personally, I thought the map for HoI was good if you consider the time period. It looked how a general would view the world, very angular and somewhat bleak. For the time period this is set in, a far more vibrant and rounded view is more appropiate. And we have to remember, this is a pre-alpha map. It will get some severe improvements.

It's good to hear dissenting opinions like this though, because this will be how things can get improved here. :)

No Alaska, so what does the U.S. get when Russia sells it? Just the Aleutians?

The race to the South Pole was a major thing at the later part of this time period, lots of prestige involved. And nowhere to race to.

I could barely see not having them in HoI since you'd only have a slim chance of having front in Alaska, and no chance of an Antarctic front. Here they're needed.

Same for the northern waterways... How exactly is Russia going to send it's Baltic fleet to be beaten by Japanese in 1905? By sending it around Africa?

Will we be able to sail around New Zealand? In HOI the country was cut off by the edge of the map (well, it is at the edge of the world :p )which looked rather odd :)

Yep - weird huh!:D Although some of them did go through the Suez Canal after they had made up with Britain for shelling some British trawlers in the North Sea after they had "mistaken" them for Japanese torpedo boats. Methinks too much wodka for the Imperial Fleet that day:D

Not the Russian Navy's most glorious moment.

I like the new map - but I hope there is still a view similar to the HOI - where the different colours represent different sorts of terrain. Grey for mountain etc, it's easier to play that way.

Graphics are greatly improved though.

This is good, I have been playing Paths of Glory lately (world war I), and now it's coming to my PC!!! Lucky me!

I really like the look of the map so far. I'm not entirely sure how "terrain" per se is going to be represented, or portrayed. But then, i'm sure this is only one out of a few views of the map. I defintiely don't see anything that is so disagreeable it could be called ugly. I'm sure there are many things that will be worked on, just as much as i'm sure the interface we are looking at now is drastically different than the interface we will be looking at in the coming months.

it just occurred to me that whatever the maps end up looking like..

many of us will end up staring at it for hours a day everyday, very well for the rest of our lives. :)

so yes.. i now see the importance everybody is putting on it.

that and the fact we really don't have much else to go on at this point.

i stick with my single suggestion.. the lines that are drawn to signify national borders should be bolder.

But what about Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld? He was one of the most important explorers in 19th century and he discovered the North-Eastern passage 1878 - 1880 (and he made several other voyages before that). Surely You are going to include explorers like Livingstone, Stanley and what-not in the game, so why leave this out?:)
