Not surprised. If they actually accurately modelled the different shaped faces of the two different peoples it'd be twice as much work. Ethiopia would also have to be one of the least played countries... especially concidering it's difficulty.

The question also has to be asked, even if this dlc got a decent number of sales... how many people actually bought it for it's sake and how many bought it to be a completionist. So far with at least one dlc I fall into the second category and it'll probably be the same way with this one (as soon as I'm able to make purchases online again in a couple of days).

Ethiopia is probably played a lot because of its high difficulty. People like a challenge.
I think the African characters in the Better Looking Characters mod looked East African. They were just dark-skinned variations of the Arabic characters with some minor tweaks, if I recall. So Paradox wouldn't have to do all that much work.
Also, I do like the look of the new African faces, and I don't regret purchasing it.

Do you have to play a Muslim to listen to the Islamic tunes? If not I am very interested in buying that.

And Liamgamer, I suspect the Abyssinian rulers are played pretty often judging from the threads posted here, and an incredibly good AAR from Philo23b which has inspired many of us to give it a try.

You do, technically, but what music plays is controlled by an easily modifiable text file so you can just put it (or any other music you like) on regular rotation.
What parts of this file looks like:
(found in main game folder/music/songs.txt

song = {
name = "akingisdead.ogg"

chance = {
modifier = {
factor = 1
}
}
}

You could easily put in "if you're not playing a muslim country factor = 0" with the correct syntax and it'd work. By default all songs play randomly all the time, at least that's how it worked for the islamic music dlc, I'm not sure if this has changed with the byzantine music (probably not).

That'd be a good idea for a mod actually, work out what songs sound battley and make them play slightly more often while you are at war (e.g. 30% more likely). Similarly you could have islamic music play slightly more (30% more likely) while you're playing an islamic nation. Even a subtle effect could affect the atmosphere of the game for the player a lot.

Hello y'all. Just gonna give you our five cents about this, and try to explain why we did what we did and what kind of limits we have. "The face guy" actually did his homework on this one, and researched faces, culture and stuff like facepaint etc for several days to make this one the best face pack yet : )
Unfortunately, as you all probably know by now (seeing as you're all hardcore CKII-players, by the sound of things in this forum xD), CKII is a game which combines an almost infinite amount of cultures, people, and histoical events which might change the way countries evolve and what people look and who rules where, and so on. Even though we knew that Northen Africans and Eastern africans from the horn etc looks a bit different, we had to go with a generic look that suited them all "good enough". It's better that the africans in general look like africans, than arabs, if you know what I mean : ) If you're in a position where you have to choose one look to go with, this is probably the best one for everyone : )
Not saying it's impossible this might be fixed in the future, but for now, I guess you have to make do with the african faces you got this time ;P

We're graphics people though, so we're always for more graphics ;)

Well in terms of past work with faces it's all been pretty high quality, I suppose I'll soon see if African faces is the same.

and lets be honest, most (90%+ even?) ck2 players aren't even aware what east africans look like in the slightest or that they look different to west africans (everyone's seen african americans who are descended from west africans on tv etc though).

Also, I'd far prefer a russian face pack to an east african one.

We're graphics people though, so we're always for more graphics ;)

First of all, I think I speak for everyone when I say that you so far has made one of the greatest game ever made - also in graphic terms... ;)
Alas, from a customer perspective, we perhaps have some expectations, especially since we have to pay for these new portraits... And in terms of how well everything in the game is pieced together, (and Mongol DLC) this more seems like a way to make a fast buck! In my case, I had expected more from this DLC, more variable african portraits, and a better mix of Eastern and Western africans...

I guess it all falls back on the "What can I get from the money I spend"... We want more than we pay for, but of course there is some limitations... And the DLC IS out now, so there is not much to do about it...
Except nagging and complaining - hoping that future releases will improve what we already have...

When having an open Forum, there will always be feedback, both possitive and negative...

EDIT: And liamgamer55 - I think you are wrong when stating over 90% doesnt know how an East-african look like... Remember, that there often is mediacoverage from Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia... So, dont think that people here are stupid - and besides, what is that for an argument, that PI should just ignore our suggestions, because we dont know better?
Buy the DLC, before you talk about it like that, the quality is not in how 4 specially picked portraits look like, but how the whole package work - and when most Africans start to look like those 4 portraits over and over again, thats where we think if this is really worth the money...

Haha, yeah, in sweden, that's the price of a can of Coke xD I remember the good old days, when a "DLC-pack" to the original Street Fighter II called Street Fighter II Turbo, cost about 121 USD in Sweden xD
Those were the (expensive) days ;)

I can't help with/confirm this in any way since I'm not a tech guy, but someone mentioned this in an earlier thread and people kept saying that might be a bug, since there are actually a lot of different looking faces and ages etc in the pack : O Someone also said this had been a problem with previous versions too, so you might wanna check that : )

So you suggest that I should delete, and reinstall the DLC?
Well, it can never hurt to try... Would be an amazing surprise if there is actually more than what we have seen so far... :)
Otherwise we just have very different opinions on whats "a lot" ;)
Thanks...

Yeah, maybe : ) I'm not a tech guy, so I can't help you with the specifics but, I know that the face guy put a lot of effort into giving these guys a distinctive look (while at the same time not overdoing it, they're supposed to be conbine-able with a LOT of different characteristics :) )

I'll see if I can find a picture of the various faces, so yoiu can compare with your game and see if it might be an issue you have, or just that we, as you say, have different opinions : )

Also, there seem only to be 1 or perhaps 2 face paintings in my game, dont know how many the Face guy has made, when you state that he has researched a lot on this?

I bought sword of Islam to be completionist, but African faces has been a genuinely great bit of DLC. As for Ethiopia, I think the current use of West African faces is accurate enough. To get all ethnicities exactly right would take a long, long time. I'm looking forward to a potential Baltic faces pack which will make vikings look like vikings and less like Franks!
