Disappearing POPs

I've never seen this question asked while browsing this forum, but sorry if it has been.

Often when I promote my POPs (usually to clerks or craftsmen...especially clerks though) the whole group will suddenly disappear. Is this because of immigration?

I'm not talking about little POPs here, sometimes an entire 40k POP will just disappear as soon as I promote it. The only explanation I could come up with (assuming this is not a bug) is immigration, but I've never had a POP of forty thousand Germans appear in any of my provinces while playing as the United States.

Happens in both V:R and VIP:R.

check to make sure that in the same province you do not have also a pop of the same culture, religion and workforce that is < 10K in size as the one you just converted. They will merge together into one POP.

Other than that, it's not something i've seen.
