So one of my neighbors was encroaching on my territory, and I decided to trim him back a bit. He was in a defensive alliance with a good neighbor of mine, so I couldn't attack him directly. But he was also in alliance with someone in the opposite direction.

So I declared on that empire. The terms I picked were to humiliate that empire and to "liberate" a couple of systems from the encroaching neighbor. I also destroyed two outposts of his, and one of the humiliated empire.

When it came time to end the war, I wasn't allowed to humiliate the empire I didn't "liberate" any thing from.

Why?

I think you only have the option at the start of the war to humiliate the one you're declaring war on. Sounds like you're trying to humiliate the other empire which has a defensive pact with the one you targeted, which shouldn't be possible. I don't think.

Not entirely clear what you were trying to do here.

Yes, I did try to humiliate the empire that I declared war on. And I liberated worlds from the other, allied power.

My problem is that after fighting and winning the war, the humiliate war goal had a big red "X" on it on the negotiate tab. So the game wouldn't let me humiliate them.

Why?

Did you gain any warscore against the humiliate target? If all you did was attack your neighbor, maybe you couldn't force your demands against the other guy

"Sure, we agree to end the war, but you didn't even attack us. Why should we be humiliated?"

Did you select those demands a second time?

YOu have to pick them when you start the war, but then you need to pick which ones you want to try enforcing DURING the war- its in the second tab of the war tracker, where it shows you how open they are to surrendering and allows a "white peace".

Yes, I did this. That's when the big red "X" shows up.
