I have heard that the pirate spawning is tweaked in HttT. But still, because of my large, vast empire, it is impossible for me to have a fleet big enough to increase the "pirate safe" range. So how can I disable pirates? If I comment them out in the common/countries.txt, the game refuses to start.

Have you consider to make a small ship on patrol to avoid the pirates spawn?

I'm the British and I have a lot of small colonies every where and to prevent any pirate ship, I make some fleet with a single Galley (because they are fast) and make them patrol around my colonies and around the British islands.

You can also patrol on other ally or with good standing contries to prevent them to spawn and roam around.

If we still have to do this crap - admit it, its ridiculously silly and micro-heavy - then the new patrol ranges need some tweaking.

How can we mod that? Is it hardcoded? Tied to Supply Range maybe?

I've tried all the standard methods: commenting out the pirates in the countries.txt, chaning their tech to new_world, and deleting all pirate files and entreis. It either does nothing or breaks the game.

They spawn as soon as a nation gets to tech 9, I haven't found a way around it. There's nothing in the naval_tech files though.

I have zero clue how to disable them. I think it may currently be hardcoded, maybe 4.1 will help.

You don't like having to recall all those little boats each time you go to war and set them up again afterward?!

I haven't tried it, but if you're willing to pay the price, I believe it would still work to change the blockade level (in naval.txt) to level 71. You wouldn't get them until then. At least, that's what's special about level 9.

Do you actually have to make them patrol through the sea zones? I may have misunderstood the notation when I hovered over a sea zone, but it appeared that if the zone was in range of the ships in port, then they were considered "patrolled". Based on this I planted single carrack fleets in a few key locations for my early British colonial empire and have had only a few instances of piracy. (e.g., I own a large chunk of France, but a single carrack at Vendee appears to make safe the entier west coast. Same results with respect to Ireland and western England/Scotland from leaving a single carrack in Meath. Same results with a ship in Innu for Northeastern North America). Perhaps I've just been lucky?

They can keep the seazones patrolled from port now if the fleet is big enough...

I have had no problems with pirates. if they are spawning in some area move a little feet of 3 or 4 ships there, they will stop.

I'm not sure I understand tuore's problem?

But still, because of my large, vast empire, it is impossible for me to have a fleet big enough to increase the "pirate safe" range.

Does this mean that you're attempting to make a single fleet so big that it patrols your entire empire?

Bump.
We really need a fix for this...

There is nothing wrong with the new system. As your tech increases, so does the range at which the fleets in port are effective. I'm tech 17 (I think) and 1/2 dozen small ships work 2 sea areas away. It covers a decent area, and the squadron can essentially be forgotten. No micro there.

Cheers

Bruce

But because of the pirates, I don't get any tariffs on my colonies in Mexico... and they're even on the wrong side (on the pacific side, which I can't reach). And when I move my fleet there, pirates spawn in my African regions.

Well, I guess I'll build another 30 big ships and make one huge fleet in America, another in Africa.

But it's really annoying, it's hard to concentrate on warfare because of this.

Is it possible to increase the patrolling range? Is it easily moddable in some file? If so, one could increase it to some ridiculously big number so that one fleet, no matter where it is, would cover the entire world...

I tried looking for the tech file, but couldn't find. It's not in the common/units either.

While I agree we need to get rid of pirates ASAP, in the mean time they're easy to deal wth.

7 (I think that's how many I used) strategically positioned Galley's can cover the entire Carribean, another 5-8 can cover the Atlantic coast of S.America, and the same again can cover the coast of N.America.

Just leave them in single units in port with fleet names like "Pirate Stopper" so you know not to use them.
