That's a lot of 'mights'. I think you're assuming a bit too much on behalf of other people. Forums like civfanatics or nationstates have userpolls, and they don't experience any of the problems you're describing.
I use mights exactly because I cannot know for certain what other people will do. But I am basing my response on what I have observed over many years of forum use.

That's fair enough, but how can you observe the inaction of other posters, when you don't know when they'dve posted otherwise?

I have previously seen people write about there being no point in making that statement since they think majority is against, but they will make it anyway; those people might very well not post then if they can see exactly how many are for it. A number which will be misleading since the people using the poll won't be a representative sample.

I suspect those people are simply trying to have their cake and eat it in terms of running against the grain. But I still fail to see how this will stifle discussion in any meaningful way.. do people really give a shit if they're voting in an unpopular fashion, given that nobody would know they're voting that way? And how can somebody know if their opinion is unpopular in the first place if there is no way to vote in favour of it?

Regardless, this does quite fly in the face of what I've personally seen user-initiated polls do. Which is nothing, really.

Also, what is your opinion of polls at all, then? Do staff polls somehow not effect discussion in the same way user polls supposedly do? And how is this any different from the present agree/disagree system? It seems identical to me, except with additional anonymity and the benefit of allowing users to collate answers other than yes/no.

If you disagree with what someone has said, there's a need to discuss it. This isn't reddit, if someone has said something you disagree with, yet you can't actually come up with a coherent counterargument the flaw is probably with your objection not the original argument. An opinion without reason isn't a useful opinion.

I don't like all this "This isn't reddit" stuff. As though that's reason enough to remove any feature that exists on there. After all, when was the last time you heard a reddit user saying "This isn't Paradoxplaza"? :p

But it isn't their voting we are talking about. But whether or not they would post a long argument which goes directly against what the majority has voted. And based on the years I have been on the forum there are people who would then keep quiet even though they might have a very good counter argument.
Regardless, this does quite fly in the face of what I've personally seen user-initiated polls do. Which is nothing, really.

Mod polls can be problematic too; you might notice that they aren't used particularly much either. I think it is because of this exact reason. And as mentioned earlier unless it is a simply yes/no question you will never have an exhaustive poll; it will always lack some opinions which might be very valid---the OP just didn't think of them. Or worse: Disliked them and didn't include them deliberately.
And I have stated multiple times that I don't like the agree/disagree system and rather would have it removed---or since the admins apparently need it then only make the admins see what people agree/disagree with. There is no need to hold a popularity contest. Furthermore there is ambiguity in the agree/disagree. Because an agree can both be that you agree with that post or that you just like the content: E.g. that you know the post is factually incorrect, but you like the conclusion. Or with disagrees where it is more of an issue. You can disagree with a post or you can acknowledge that the post is correct, but dislike it being that way. Just by looking at the number of agrees/disagrees it is impossible to tell how many of the different agrees/disagrees are given and the system therefore is superfluous and redundant; if not actually harmful since people might not state which kind of agree/disagree they meant.

Weren't we discussing the effectiveness of polls vs yes/no systems? And if one was better than another? My original response was to the pro yes/no bloc.

At any rate, I see the truth in your arguments. I can't say I have a good response for them, either. But I find that I remain in favour of allowing polls instead of a yes/no system, if only because I emphasise one thing more than another. It's been genuinely nice talking to you.

Are you going to remove those spammed "agree" and "helpfull" ratings that were given in OT, or will you keep them?

Are you going to remove those spammed "agree" and "helpfull" ratings that were given in OT, or will you keep them?
Why do you think they were spammed? Because they were not agreeing with your posts?
Because the opinions of other people when they are different from yours are considered spam in your high opinion?

Jesus Christ, stop trying to judge OT as some sort of chaotic rabble; we agree with something and we disagree with many things, but a large amount of people posting on OT do wish to have the agree button back. Does having many agrees give you any sort of economic utility? Nope. Does having large amount of disagree give you any sort of economic disutility? Nope.
It will just be easier to click the button "Agree" than making another +1 post or yet another "I agree with you"-post. I want to have a thread that is 100% debate and not twice as long but filled with +1/I agree posts.

And has anyone explained why French/Spanish/German/Swedish OT forums have both post counts and agrees?

Of course they were spammed, several users went through the Polandball and UK Politics threads liking/helpfulling every single post they got to for starters :p

I dont have any problem with normal ratings - I was talking about those thousands of ratings given to you and some others in first days of a new forum (and I saw several posters, that admited to spamming these ratings), before these features were disabled for whole OT. Because of things like this, it might get disabled for the whole forum, which would be pitty, because its rather usefull in some discussions.

U jelly?

I just have a huge crush on Enewald and so read through all his/her recent posts to find out how to catch his/her attention and found out I'm actually agreeing with all their points. Can you blame me? :(

I think that the voting system can be kept in the OT, but not count towards reputation like posts in that forum do not count towards post count. In the rest of the forum however, it makes sense to keep it (for the reasons already outlined by others).
What about the foreign language OTs

Also I am a fan of, if we keep nothing else, allowing helpful to be used on all forums as, as the name says, it can be helpful in finding informational posts
