Disable animated sprites?

I sometimes use a remote desktop app to access EU2. I've found that with HOI2: Doomsday, I get much better responsiveness when I'm using the unit counters rather than the animated unit graphics.

Is there a mod which has non-animated unit graphics or counters, or is there a way to disable the animation of the unit sprites.

Well, I found out that I could edit the spr files to set the Speed = 0 which stops the unit itself animating, but the flag is still waving away in the corner...
I couldn't find any other spr files, so I'm guessing the flag animation settings are hardcoded somewhere. I suppose it might be possible to create flag bmps which have all the frames the same...

if you just delete the corresponding .bmp files you get what equates to a counter in HOI. It's just a number with a flag in the corner.
