Imereti has 97 developments and it costs 349 diplomatic powers to diplomatically annex Imereti. On the other hand, I can core a 9 development province for 23 administrative powers.
So, annexing Imereti's provinces directly would cost 248 administrative powers. I thought diplomatic annexation was cheaper than province annexation. Can you explain to me what is I am missing?
*I have no claims on Imereti or anything like that.

How do you annex just a province??

I suspect, but don't have the game handy to check, you are missing the question of core type, and the peace deal screen is showing the cost for a territory core, while diplomatic annexation gives you full cores.

The reason I am thinking this is the coring costs don't add up otherwise: a 9 Dec province has a base core cost of 90. Your CCR is only around 45%, so 23 admin seems a fairly long way cheaper. Especially as admin efficiency applied to both approaches according to the wiki.

The idea is that you can core some provinces yourself using your admin points and at the same time you can integrate a vassal and get cores through diplo points. It is not cheaper per say, except with some specific ideas like influence 2.

@RobbieAB
The math is not wrong, you just have the wrong premise. Atkara is 8 dev but cost 9 diplo point to take in the peace deal because it is not the war goal (8 dev x 3 mana x 60% unjustified demand = 9 mana cost)

8 dev = 80 mana
80 * .55 = 44 mana full core
44 / 2 = 22 initial coring cost. the 23 is good because of rounding probably.

@World Union
Annexation IS cheaper with 8 mana per dev (vs the 10 mana per dev mentionned for full core)

It depends mostly what you want to do with the land itself, imo a Syrian vassal is good for ottoman because it is your culture group and useful for trade so you want it full core at some point. Golden Horde on the other hand is not great, so you should take the land directly and not full core, that way you pay 5 per dev istead of 8 or 10.

There are other benefit in consideration to vassalising instead of conquering to not forget that can value the cost difference : more missionaries, lesser AE, admin capacity, canon fodder, etc.

Direct annexing, you can have double coring costs if you are making it a state. Plus you have to deal with AE.

Diplo annexing takes longer but no ae, just a hit to Diplo.

In most cases in 1.30 I would much rather release a vassal and feed them rather than direct annexing, unless the ae isn't an issue or I need the province now (gold provinces for example).

As mentioned the base cost of 8 mana per dev to diplo annex is less than the 10 admin per dev for a full core.

But that is only the base cost.

That isn’t accurate. Feeding land to vassals generally gets you the same AE as taking it yourself. Vassalizing someone by force gets you a bit less AE than conquering them but far from none. The only way to take no AE is to diplo vassalize people and it is hard to take a particularly large amount of land that way. The main way vassals reduce AE is via the reconquest CB.

Costwise, if going full expansion mode with territories, admin is usually cheaper, butyour various bonuses will play a big role. However if you coring tons of land you may fall behind ontech, ideas, etc. If you move some of that to Diplo annexing it becomes more balanced and though you spend more points overall you are more efficient with them.

Also vassals have huge benefits until they are annexed.

@Guibou I am not sure what your point is about my premise being wrong... you have just shown the cost works for a territorial core, while I was saying it didn't work for a full core. Basically, you have just agreed with me. :)
