Don't worry, members of the forum have a lot of answers :p

1) Relations are affected by declarations of war, with a few things to keep in mind. Declaring war without a causus belli will have far more serious an effect on relations than with a CB. Anyone with the same religion as the victim of the declaration, or who has a dynastic or military alliance with them, will hate you for it more than the average joe; those with whom you have an alliance will not care as much. How much it will lower your relations is, I think, proportional to how much it lowers your stability. As the wars drag on, your relations will fall with everyone you're at war with, regardless of who's alliance leader. France is probably declaring wars where they have a CB, and you probably where you don't. France may also be spending cash and diplomats to kiss and make up with the people they've offended.

2) See 1).

3) Relations are a two-way street; it also matters what their tolerance levels are. Also, changes to relations due to tolerance settings are very slow; those due to wars are sudden and pronounced.

BTW, taking provinces in a peace deal will also make you unpopular; taking money will at least keep your allies happly.

It's important to remember also that anytime you militarily annex another country, your relations with all countries of the same religion falls by 100 points. (i.e. annexing some Italian Catholic minor is cause your relations with fellow Catholics to fall by -100). The good news is that you get more wealthy as you expand, such that if there's some country you want to make friends with, you can buy their friendship fairly easily.
