In preparation for 1.5 I've recently returned to Stellaris and added Leviathan thanks to the nice humble bundle deal. :) I'm quite excited about the upcoming DLC, but wanted to ask about changes to Diplomacy (couldn't find dev diary to answer it)

A few hours into my game it forcefully reminded me, why I had just one completed campaign with it before: Diplomacy. In particular, I feel there is a lack of tools to deal with alliance webs.
  • If all the galaxy is in defensive pacts and federation that is ok. I accept there needs to be a reaction to aggressive players.
  • However, at least, PLEASE, give me the tools to deal with this in some way. Some sort of counterplay to intricate alliance webs of all my neighbors (EU4 equivalent of co-belligerent war and separate peace deal with end alliance war demand):
    • Force break alliance / pacts
    • Force leave / dissolve federations
  • Atm the only option is to go to war every 10 years with the same whole sector or accept that my expansion plans are on pause until I have a fleet to match the whole damn alliance (aka, "hurrah, I play tall now but everything is built and there is nothing to do here but wait").

Are there any plans to deal with this in the upcoming patch & DLC? (I know late game war demands will be tweaked to allow taking more, but it does not address the stifling chains of alliances before midgame)

PS: In my case (collectivist, militarist, spiritualist) I had two wars, in what I consider the early midgame taking two planets each (average size of neighbors 4-6 planets). Is this normal?

yeah. 10 years of truce can be tiresome. especially if enemies have no chance to oppose you. and diplomacy in stellaris is almost non-existent.
i really doubt that 1.5 will change it. after all they are making lots of changes in the other areas of the game

In my case (collectivist, militarist, spiritualist) I had two wars, in what I consider the early midgame taking two planets each (average size of neighbors 4-6 planets). Is this normal?
i usually set Vassalize as a war goal in such cases. it's cheaper then cede whole empire. and after 10 years you can integrate them (or just set them free and attack)

I can't even do anything as basic as say "hey, I'd really like you to vote yes to allow this guy into the federation". Instead I have to wait for trust to build up on its own.

Hopefully the tweaks in War Goal scores will mean that even though you are limited by the 10 year truce you can actually have fewer but more meaningful conflicts in the mid to late game...

Usually if I'm bored in late-game I go punch a fallen empire in the face(don't try with an awakened empire unless its extremely late-game) or if I have unhappy vassals/tributaries I purposely scuttle my military to get them to attack, then use that as an excuse to break them up into smaller chunks via liberation so they don't try to start shit while I'm at war with someone important. You can also go over your sectors cause often the sector ai will leave random unbuilt patches on planets, so you can sort through all your planets to make sure everything is optimal. Just un-sector a planet, build everything you want there, and put it back in the sector.

thanks for the workaround tips. Using vassal mechanics to circumvent some of these issues is definitely worth a try for me.

From the lack of responses concerning Utopia I can conclude that barebone diplomacy won't be touched this DLC? Oh well, can't complain otherwise about Utopia's size or ambition. So lets hope for DLC #2 then to improve diplomacy. :)

Problem is, alliances are hard to forge which is why they should be hard to break. I personally don't find the galaxy swamped in a pre-WW1 diplomatic mess until about 300 years into the game. No one is willing to ally with others while they can still expand, so the best thing you can do is just to stay neutral. Let the others duke it out, them attack them while they are weak. Federations are a problem. No easy solution for that.

Also you seem to go to war a lot. Even as a fanatic militarist I use wars sparingly. Wars tend to make other empires stick permanently in the negative opinion side. Try to cut down on the wars, and if you do go to war, make sure you grab as much as you can.

Small "nibble" wars are a good strategy, but you'll soon start to see a wall of Federations and Alliances getting in your way
Larger "all in" wars are harder to accomplish, but are better long-term diplomacy wise IMO
