Question: is it possible to run out of upload allowance with imageshack? And if so what other image hosting site could I use that allows direct image linking?
The answer to that is "no". Because even if they capped accounts, which I've never experienced, you don't need to be logged in to upload, and it's still possible to direct-link when not signed in simply by taking the "forum" code and deleting the url tags around the img tags.
Photobucket must have improved - it was awful when I switched to imageshack years ago, capped account sizes and such.
I use imageshack for the pictures on my AARs, and I've uploaded more than fifty ~500kb pics per month most months. I don't think you'll run out with diplomacy maps.
I used photobucket for my AAR and near the end it stopped showing my screenshots. It killed the AAR. 
Must just be a problem with the AARs people actually read.

Diplomacy maps weigh in at approximately 200 kb a map. It wasn't the diplomacy maps I was worried about, it was the Europa Universalis 3 "authentic looking" maps I've been uploading for the multiplayer game I'm in, that are over 1mb in size, that I thought might tip me over some kind of bandwidth allowance.
On topic, I downloaded realpolitik and... how do I even open it?

I have very bad news... I'm afraid my computer has, well, died. None of the USB ports work and thus I have no mouse and no keyboard. It also randomly crashed three times followed by it refusing to start until I shut it down for over an hour.
I have a backup PC, but unfortunately it does not contain the files needed to create the update, and I'm not sure when the problem will be fixed; it may fix itself after a few hours in the powered-down state, I may have to wait until Monday and take it to a technician, who could then take up to a week to fix whatever the problem is. I don't really have the state of mind required for redoing the map from scratch on my back up, so, unless the problem solves itself, the game will have to either be a) suspended or b) another take my place as GM, whether temporarily or permanently.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience... now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go cry in a corner.
UPDATE: mouse is now working but not keyboard. I have to use the damn onscreen keyboard.
UPDATE 2: Crisis possibly avoided. Both mouse and keyboard now work, after numerous restarts and shifts of the usb connecter to a different usb port. My wireless headphones, however, do not work. I'll jump that hurdle after updating.
