Well, it is nice to see the German back in the game, but I am saddened that he has to lose Munich and Marseille. The good news is that we have finally liberated Norway and I hope to contain the Italian-Turkish alliance.

Unless Italy switches sides, the battle-lines are
drawn. Germany will crumble while England erodes my
empire from the North. But once Italy and Turkey hit
the Atlantic, this will stop and we will be
victorious.

Turkey could stab me, but why? I am worried about
players abandoning the game if it goes much longer.
I'd hate to see that. If it has served it's purpose,
let's wrap it up and move on. :)

Well.....what to say. Italy, Russia and I are now firmly in camp. It's only a matter of time before Germany caves and England with him. Although England's recent build of two fleets is going to cause a naval battle in the Atlantic shortly.

Italy's recent suggestion that he may be forced to leave the game is also a slight cause for concern. Mind you IF a new Italy comes into the game, any deal I made with current Italy goes out the window.

France (SM) suggests I stab Russia now. But that will never happen; I've committed myself to a russian alliance from day one.

My moves this turn involve slowly moving my fleets westward and position them to convoy into Spain/Portugal next Fall.

I'm also going to attack Munich with Russia's support.

END OF GAME PROPOSAL
The proposal to end the game in a DIAS fails.

GM CONSOLIDATION OF NEW PROPOSALS FOR DRAW
There is another proposal, submitted by me given some of what I'm seeing in the mail. (The GM proposing anything and the terms of this proposal are extremely unorthodox. If you don't like it, simple: Vote No.)

The proposal is to continue play through Autumn 1908, then stop the game at that point. The position with the most SCs is declared the winner, second most SCs survives/takes second place, and so on and so forth.

Any NMRs during a spring/fall turn until end of game would remove that player from the standings. IE- they would instantly be bumped to sixth ahead of the destroyed Austrian player.

This should help address any concerns I've seen. My main concern is that the game will continue perpetually and then just vanish into oblivion or be won by the one player who stuck it out. I've certainly seen games go longer, much longer - but the new Dip game is now in the beta testing stage and I'm sure we're all going to want to focus on that fairly soon. There's also precedence for a game ending at a specific point rather than 18 SCs (as a reminder, our original house rules DID say no alliances - DIAS or solo - an alliance would have to trust each other long enough to remove everyone else.) Plus, if we select Fall 1908 as the end point that gives us three turns to complete your maneuvers.

Let me know with your fall moves. As always, it must be unanimous.

Another NMR worked to my benefit but really hurt the
game. Looks like I'll hold St. Pete after all. Germany
is crumbling. England may hang on a while.
Turkey would be in prime position to stab Italy, but I
think he'll honor the alliance.

Although France is still around, technically. The game
has essentially broken down to a 3 on 2, and I'm happy
to be on the side with the "3". :)

Well, it looks like we've pretty much reached the stalemate line in central Europe. In the Med, Italy will help me take Spain and I'll make a lunge for Portugal. Given that, by all likelihood we'll be ending the game in a year, this should give me enough to win the game.

Not much more to do than hold on to what I have, for now anyway; the position I hold doesn't allow for much expansion; at this point I prefer relatively risk-free holding to risky attempts at taking, the loss of Berlin and Munich, while it hurts, does mean my opponents can't gather strength easily, their front is too small.

This is the end game. Another NMR, on retreats,
signals it is time to wind this up. Italy has stuck
with us so far and Turkey seems to be the prime
beneficiary of the alliance, but I have no problems
with that. Hopefully this demonstration has shown the
potential power and success of the Russia/Turkey
"Juggernaut" strategy.

I was hoping for different German retreats, but the
English loss of the army Sweden was an unexpected
benefit.

The 2nd Regime -

Entering the game as a substitute for a failing country, I intended to try to find some way to survive first, and ideally actually be part of something important, and especially to reclaim some of my poor country. I offerred myself up to Germany and England to aid them in anyway possible. Both agreed. I figured Germany would renege so I was happy with England. I tried very hard to get everyone to stab everyone else, but got nowhere with that. But, at some point I accidently became a go-between for English/Turk talks about stabbing their respective partners. That would have been nice. Anyway, both stabs were thwarted (English mis-moves and Russian counter-moves). Others in the game felt that the stabs were contrived. I don't know. After that, I couldn't count on England anymore, and took a shot for shelter in Brest. I've been content to sit things out. I felt some sympathy for the western alliance (oddly) and refused to help the easterners. And, I told England and Germany I wouldn't mess with them.

flag_d_ger.jpg

GERMANY
Forzaa

No attacks, hopefully they recognised my fairly strong position, and will not try anything once more.. meanwhile, I remain dug in.

I must say the game is even more devious than it seemed.. Italy tries to convince us of a "Juggernaut" Russian-Turkish alliance, and when we finally manage to get a decent position against this Juggernaut, he throws in his lot with the Turk and breaks through my lines.

NMR's, I must say, were quite a shock as well, the damage these do is much more severe, or so it seems, than not ordering in most other games.

All in all, for me it was a nice introduction to a very deep game, and I can only hope I'll get the chance to learn more, and maybe think of something truly devious someday that brings me victory :D

Final Words:

Unfortunately though, interest in the game had wained.
CatKnight had forwarded a number of EGPs (End Game Proposals) including a
DIAS (Draw Includes All Survivors).
I voted no.

My main motivation for this vote was that the game was still fluid. It
wasn’t like we were all bashing ourselves off stalemate lines. And there
were the NMRs. I never agree to a “draw” with a player who is not even
playing anymore. CatKnight considered the options and proposed a new EGP which took this into account: I voted yes.

The EGP would result in a Supply Centre grab during the last year.
I could probably expect third place behind Turkey(Josephus I) and
Russia(heagarty) – I could live with that.

Germany (ForzaA) would come in fourth, having paid the price for spreading
his forces too thinly and not trusting his allies more.

France (State Machine) would earn a well fought fifth – having survived
against the odds thanks only to his powerful diplomatic skills.

Thanks to my fellow players.

Had the game gone on things may have been different – to win as Italy
requires patience and it is well known that Italian wins tend to be in long
games. I draw some condolence in the fact that I survived and was on my
way…

Finally, thank you CatKnight for running this game.

Well, after a long time, it's all over. The goal from the beginning was for me and Russia to win. The brutal war of attrition with Italy caused me to form an alliance with him in order to guarantee my victory because England and Germany were gaining on us as I fought the Italians.

I did for a short while consider stabbing Russia, but in the end I couldn't do it. It was the right decision and I have no regrets.

All in all it was a good game. Austria's early NMR's made the Balkan wars a bit too easy and certainly helped the Italian decline in the east. HE certainly had the edge there for a bit.

REMEMBER: This was a demonstration of the play-by-email version of the board game produced by Avalon Hill from which Paradox developed their Diplomacy Game. It is not intended to represent the brand new game. However it should help convey some of the strategy and tactics, and the importance of communication and negotiation.

Perhaps as well it illustrates that the best way to play is via multi-player, with live opponents, but that there is a HUGE benefit to having computer AI which can jump in and take over abandoned positions so as not let missed moves ruin the game.

This thread was closed while I was posting the demonstration. A COMMENTS THREAD was running concurrently.

Please use the COMMENTS thread for any comments or questions you have about this Demonstration.

THANK YOU to all volunteer players and writers and the GM!

Bumped by PMed request. :)

This is a sample PBEM game we played while Diplomacy was still under development to show people some strategies and how the actual "diplomacy" took place.

It still has some value for MP games of Paradox Diplomacy. :)
