Why can't you annex provinces which you do not control if you have enough of a war score to do so from having control of the enemy capital. I notice a problem when I control the enemy capital. From control of the enemy capital I have a high war score, but I do not control any other provinces. So my high war score is useless because I can't use it to annex any provinces. Please help-this can't be right.

Wait until they offer you provinces. Best answer I can give... I suppose you have to control it if you want to take it.

Control of the enemy capital has several advantages in war.
It turns the AI into wishing peace more eagerly.
It is required for force-vassalization
It is required for force-conversion
It is usually worth more in warscore
If you want one specific province the best option is to conquer the capital and that province and the AI will end up offering it, as it cannot offer any other one.

The AI can offer you provinces which you do not control, but you cannot demand such provinces yourself.

And... you get the maps of the country. :D

To re-iterate an important point:

You may not obtain in peace provinces you do not control unless they are your core provinces, delineated on the political mapview with one of your shields on it.

There are times owning the capital province can be a good thing besides those listed. For instance, if the country has its government fall, turbo-annexation of provinces you control occurs, including, IIRC, the capital province.

Edit: Then again, maybe not. :p

Okee, let's take an example Marshall:

Catland is a five province nation. It consists of West Cat, North Cat, East Cat, South Cat and Capital Cat (WC, NC, EC, SC and CC)

Not surprisingly, CC is my capital.

Scenario 1:
You own CC, but that's it.

UNLESS one of my other provinces is controlled by you, OR said province is one of your cores, then I cannot offer it for peace, and you can't demand it.

On the other hand, I (as the AI) will be more eager to make peace. I can also be forcevassalized if your war score is high enough. Note I cannot be forceannexed, not in this situation.

To forceannex a nation, you must control all its provinces (100% warscore) AND it must be pagan. OR it must be a one province minor and you control said province.

Now...

Scenario 2:
You own CC and SC. Further, WC is a core of yours though I still control it.

You can ask for SC in a deal and I can offer it.
You can ask for WC in a deal, however its 'cost' (in warscore) is doubled since you don't control it.
I (as the AI) can offer WC if I want.
You can force vassalize (FV) me, and probably have a higher score to do so. (I think vassalization costs 70%)

Scenario 3:
You own CC, SC and WC. WC is a core.

You can ask for SC and WC normally. I can offer either or both of them.
Again, I can be FVed.

By owning my capital, if you're a Counter Reform Catholic you can make me change religion if I'm a protestant. By owning my capital (or is it just have high enough warscore? I've never done it) you can demand military access.

-------

In general, as the player if you don't have 100% warscore, ask for 10% less than what you have a right to. For example if you have a 50% WS, don't ask for more than 40 points in penalties. The AI is more likely to accept this way..it can be quite stubborn if you try to match WS with gains.

The AI is not bound by this and will usually give you the best deals if you can hold out long enough.

Hmmm, I think not. I have turbo-annexed Egypt as Venice just a couple of days ago, and I did control Cairo (egypt province), its capital, but I didn't get it.

When I control the capital of a two province nation I cannot get a satisfactory peace settlement. This is because they cannot offer their capital but they will also not offer the other province which I do not control. Finally, if they have less than 50 ducats they cannot offer me decent repreations. So I end up getting a white peace even though I took and control their capital and have a high war score. Please help

Why not just take the other province? Then you can get both the province and any money they have.

Does anyone play with forced annexation set to off? Does this mean that a nation cannot ever lose it's capital?

I always have it on. tried it off once... it makes HYW look like 2 or 3 months... don't bother... the wars against 1 prov minors never end (and if you want to take them you can't because there's a previous war going on), and the AI isn't smart enough to FV and then DA later on... :(

It means you cannot force-annex, and it effectively screws the AI, leading to even more everlasting wars. :)

Or you can take the other province and then force-vasselize them with the longer aim (20+ years) to force annex them.

If you will be a bit more specific, perhaps we can give you even more help. If all you want is the capital, then you are out of luck unless they lose the second province in another war.
