Is it possible to Diploannex a vassal who is of a different religion? If I am Catholic and they are Protestant?
If you can RM the country to form the vassalization, then you can diplo-annex him. This doesn't mean that a RM is neccessary to diplo-annex, I just mean that only countries that you CAN RM, you can diplo-annex.

Originally, Protestant and Catholic nations cannot RM, but in the later scenarios they can. Is this because of the Edict of Tolerance?
Ya I think that's the one. At any rate, when they can RM, then they can diplo-annex each other, but not before. For example Catholic can diplo-annex orthodox, even though they are different religions, because the can RM.

To be absolutely pedantic, it's not necessary to be able to marry the country in question. The condition is that the religion of your country and that of the other country are 'compatible', in the sense that under the right circumstances you would be able to offer a royal marriage to a country of that religion.

For example, an AI-controlled Papal States cannot be persuaded to marry by means of diplomacy, so it's unmarryable under normal circumstances. But clearly it's compatible with Orthodox countries, so if it's the vassal of an Orthodox country it can be diploannexed (subject to the usual other conditions).

Compatibility goes as follows:

The following groups are always compatible within the group, ie if both your religion and their religion lie in the same group, you're compatible:

Orthodox, Catholic, CRC

Orthodox, Protestant, Reformed

Sunni, Buddhist, Confucian, Hindu

Shia, Buddhist, Confucian, Hindu

Pagan

In addition, the 1st and 2nd groups merge after the Edict of Tolerance, ie Catholics and Protestants (etc) can marry.

No other pair of religions is compatible.

@H.Flashman: AFAIK, there is no difference at all between vassals acquired by force, diplomacy, event or peaceful secession (whether manually or by event). The fact that forced vassals can be quietly diploannexed later is one of my biggest gripes with the game, as it makes diplo-expansion far too easy.

Yep, when it comes to diploannexation it doesn't matter how the country was vassalized in the first place. Also, the chance of success improves with time, so you may want to wait awhile before trying. I usually wait a century or so before diploannexing a major like France or Austria, for example.

I guess I will wait awhile until the Edict of Tolerance to annex England. Spain is being annoying and refuses to be annexed. I have yet to vassalize Austria, but when I cut them down far enough I suppose I will do it.

I don't think my WC attempt as France is going too well.

At what point should I pretty much bust out of Europe and start conquering the Middle East and China to have any chance to do a WC? It is approximately 1615 and I haven't even gotten to Russia or Italy yet, though I am getting close.

Well I think you don't have a chance to get the whole world anymore. If you wanted to do a WC you should make a kind of total war shooting BB up to the sky. But this is getting OT now...

It helps if you've placed large colonies a bit everywhere (India southern tip, Siberia, Somalia). You only have to ensure you have large enough armies to face multiple fronts.

But starting exclusively in Europe, I think you need fifty years to complete your WC. Remember that any province you get that gives you a new border has the potential to start another war, so that you can reach far in the east quickly. :)
