I've been thinking a lot about colonialism lately and realised that in history there has been a number of diffrent ways to handle colonialism. But in the game right now mmost nations handle it very similiar. This is my attmept to make a system where diffrent froms of colonialism if more viable, it's only a work in progress and if you'd like me to change anything please tell me. First of there should be another colonial driven ideagroup, this in the military cathegory. Perhaps called conquest ideas. These could then be mixed in pairs of two that the colonial nations are each likely to take to combine into their own brand of colonialism. But first of the focuses of the diffrent groups.
  • Exploration should be about sea exploration, and trade, finding small colonies in many diffrent places where it's profitable. unlocks explorers and colonists as well as a causus belli that can be used on anyone outside of europe holding important centres of trade (and grabbing those provinces or making the holder a protectorate cheaper).
  • Expansion ideas should be about land exploration, founding colonial nations and using these to do a more large scale colonial effort. unlocks conquistadors and colonitsts. No causes belli of it's own.
  • Conquest ideas should be about wresting land from the hands of natives or other colnial powers and getting cores on them (thus creating colonial nations). unlocks explorers an conquistadors but no colonists. CB against all tech groups with a worse penatly than themselves, perhaps even as first idea. (as second an ability to buy cores in distant overseas but at a prince increase depending on colonial range).

The content of each of these could change however. Expansion and exploration should eahc only get one colonist. The countries that need more could get them through national ideas (mainly russia) or by their colonial nations having them.
Now for the nations

  • Portugal Exploration followed by expansion. They start of by being the foremost explorers but with the exception of brazil, increased colonial distances (see my other suggestion thread) could be used to steer them south instead of west.
  • Spain, Conquest followed by expansion, they really get most of their tterritory from subjugating the mesoamerican and andean cultures. Then using these lands as colonial nations they colonise using their colonists in south america while turning their own to north america.
  • Brittain expansion and conquest. They set up their colonial nations like the thirteen colonies part by settling part by takng land of other colonials, and then late game they take india.
  • The neatherlands exploration and conquest. they set up their own trade colonies and then fight other colonial nations for some of theirs.
  • France, expansion and exploration, they set up colonial nations in louisiana and canada but are less inclined to wage war on the natives than the bittish.
  • Russia. Conquest followed by expansion. their lack of colonial nations (because siberia isn't overseas) would mean they they would need to keep their extra colonist from their ideas (unlike other colinials who i think could lose theirs in favour of using colinial nations to do much of the colonising). Perhaps also a thing where they ignore the penatly for settling in arctic (because exploration now gives them conquistadors)
Now I know you all have things to correct about my assesments of these nations colonial histories (and probably with good reasons), and I'd love to hear you ideas on which ones should get what or how the groups could be used to represent diffrent concepts. How could I change the ideagroups and who should get which two (in some cases you might want to limit to one but try not to suggest they should get all three, I think that'd make the nation to colony focused).

One of the basic premises here is that the parent nations should use less colonists on their own. instead using those of colonial nations to do most of the gruntwork colonizing.
