Is anyone else having trouble starting Psionics?
I've only relevantly had my hands on the game for like the last 3 weeks, prior that the last time I played was 1.6. So... maybe this is normal, idk.

Anyway, I'm having trouble reliably getting the Psionic Theory tech that gates the whole psi tree.

1. I know you can get it from an anomaly if you just happen to get Echoes from the Deep and happen to do that anomaly with a Paranoid scientist
2. I know you can get it with a 25% chance from the Dark Portal if you're spiritualist.
3. I know you can get it if you spawn and survey first and own the living sea planet.
4. I know you have a 10% chance of getting a special project for it if you have a colony within 3 spaces of the Caravaneer homeworld.

Thats all pretty slim pickings. Flavorful to be sure, but the best chance is the Dark Portal, which afaik only works if you're spiritualist anyway.

Thats fine I guess, except that it seems much harder to find Psionic Theory in the normal tech roster than it used to be. I used to be able to at least scum scientists for one with the Psionic Expertise trait, except:
Code:
leader_trait_expertise_psionics = {
    cost = 1
    modification = no
    icon = "gfx/interface/icons/traits/leader_traits/leader_trait_expertise_psionics.dds"
    modifier = {
        category_psionics_research_speed_mult = @categorybonus
    }
    leader_trait = { scientist }
    leader_class = { scientist }
    prerequisites = { tech_psionic_theory }

It seems that in order to get psionic expertise on a Scientist from the normal pool, you need to already have Psionic Theory?
That doesnt even make sense, considering that Psionic Theory's weights still have a x8 chance for it to spawn if you have a scientist with Psionic Expertise.
So... you need Psionic Expertise to get Psionic Theory, but you need Psionic Theory to get Psionic Expertiese... ok...

Pretty much the only semi-reliable way to get the tech it seems is to be Fanatic Spiritualist and be researching with a Maniacal scientist, but even that doesnt boost the chance very much. I dont always want to be playing a full Fanatic Spiritual, and its still rare if you're using just Maniacal. I've gone 200 years and still not found it.

Is there something im missing, or is this whole Ascension Path extremely difficult to start? I can easily start both the robot and genetic paths by year 50, quite reliably.

yeah, its RNG and you can get lucky or not as to when you draw it. You can improve your chances of drawing it by having a maniacal scientist on society research, as long as you are not a materialist, of course.

Psionic Theory can come up without a Psionic Expertise scientist for non-Materialist empires IIRC, and at the very least it can be drawn if you have any psionic POPs in your empire- which is significantly easier to accomplish, what with the Ketlings and the Racket.

Which again I've seen not happen in 200+ years. Actually I've played a few games now and never seen either of those things. I only even know of them from looking through the files a bunch.
Seems very unreliable.

Do you own Megacorp?

The Ketlings are a bit tricky to spawn, but the Racket show up pretty inevitably.

Never? I see Racket pops on the slave market all the time. The more time passes the more opportunities for them to offer their pops to a slaver.

It's been a while since I played though, does the AI no longer sell their pops as frequently as they used to?

Shouldn't matter- you can just get them via immigration pacts, conquest, or dealing with the Racket fleet directly.

Pretty sure that Racket only has a 2/3 chance to generate in each galaxy. Idk, I've literally never seen it. Yes I do own megacorp.

Code:
        # FLEET 3
        if = {
            limit = { has_global_flag = spawn_caravaneer_3 }
            create_species = {
                name = "NAME_Caravaneer_Fleet3_species"
                plural = "NAME_Caravaneer_Fleet3_species_plural"

                namelist = "MAM4"

                    trait = "trait_pc_nuked_preference"
                    trait = "trait_psionic"
                    trait = "trait_repugnant"
                    trait = "trait_slow_breeders"
                    trait = "trait_thrifty"
                    trait = "trait_deviants"
                    trait = "trait_fleeting"
                }
                effect = {
                    set_species_flag = racket_species_flag
                    save_global_event_target_as = racket_species
                }
Code:
    init_effect = {
        # Randomize which fleets are spawned
        random_list = {
            1 = { # 1 - 2
                set_global_flag = spawn_caravaneer_1
                set_global_flag = spawn_caravaneer_2
            }
            1 = { # 1 - 3
                set_global_flag = spawn_caravaneer_1
                set_global_flag = spawn_caravaneer_3
            }
            1 = { # 2 - 3
                set_global_flag = spawn_caravaneer_2
                set_global_flag = spawn_caravaneer_3
            }
        }

This code is from megacorp_initializers.txt, the part that spawns caravaneers. If im reading it right then yeah, racket should be 2/3 chance per galaxy.

I only play casual spiritualists and had no problem getting it without appointing a psi-expert scientist as soc-research leader.

I do still welcome more options to more reliably pursue psionics. One would be the Psionic Entity that guards the gaia world/spec-tech freighter on the other side of the wormhole. Having a residual energy project figuring out as to where it came from. Another would be precursor artifacts or even a new precursor based on a psionic empire. The spiritualist fallen empire could help out as well. Events concerning mutants in your on population would be welcome too.
